President Murmu Inaugurates Bastar Pandum 2026 in Jagdalpur

RR Team, February 7, 2026February 7, 2026
President of India Smt Droupadi Murmu on Friday inaugurated the Bastar Pandum 2026 at Jagdalpur in Chhattisgarh, describing the festival as a living expression of the region’s deep-rooted cultural values and its celebration of everyday life. Addressing a large gathering, the President said Bastar’s people view every phase of nature and agriculture as a festival, reflecting a harmonious relationship with the land.
She remarked that when farmers sow seeds in the fertile soil, it becomes Pandum, and when mangoes ripen, it becomes Pandum again, highlighting the community’s tradition of celebrating life in all its forms.

Bastar’s Culture Offers Lessons to the Nation

The President said the simplicity, resilience and joy with which the people of Bastar live their lives offer valuable lessons to society at large. She noted that the traditions and cultural practices of the region have always drawn admiration from across the country.

She added that festivals like Bastar Pandum are not merely cultural events but symbols of collective identity, social harmony and respect for nature.

Decades of Maoist Violence Gave Way to Peace

Reflecting on the region’s troubled past, President Murmu said Bastar had suffered immensely due to Maoist violence over nearly four decades. The prolonged conflict had adversely affected ordinary citizens, especially youth, tribal communities and Dalit families.

She said decisive and sustained action by the Government of India against Maoist terror has significantly improved the security situation. The atmosphere of fear, mistrust and insecurity that once dominated the region is now gradually fading.

Surrender and Rehabilitation Bringing New Hope

The President noted that a large number of individuals previously associated with Maoist activities in Chhattisgarh have surrendered and returned to the mainstream. She said the government is ensuring that those who have laid down arms are supported through welfare and rehabilitation measures.

She praised the Chhattisgarh government’s ‘Niyad Nellanar Yojana’, saying it has played a crucial role in empowering villagers and restoring confidence among communities affected by conflict.

Development Reaches Bastar’s Villages

President Murmu expressed happiness over visible development in Bastar, noting that electricity, roads and drinking water facilities are now reaching remote villages. She said schools that had remained closed for years are reopening and children are returning to classrooms.

Calling this transformation encouraging, she said it reflects a new dawn of development that is improving quality of life and restoring hope among citizens.

Faith in Constitution and Democracy Urged

The President appreciated those who have abandoned violence and returned to democratic life. She urged them to place complete faith in the Constitution and the democratic system of the country.

She emphasised that hard work, dedication and trust in democratic institutions will ensure lasting peace and prosperity in the region.

Focus on Tribal Welfare and Education

Highlighting the government’s commitment to inclusive growth, President Murmu said the welfare of poor, deprived and backward communities remains a top priority. She referred to initiatives such as the PM-JANMAN Yojana and the Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan, which are bringing development benefits to the most remote tribal villages.

She underlined the importance of education, calling it the foundation of both individual and community development. Eklavya Model Residential Schools, she said, are helping tribal children access quality education.

Preserving Heritage While Embracing Progress

The President said Chhattisgarh’s ancient traditions remain vibrant even today. She cited the Bastar Dussehra, dedicated to Goddess Danteshwari, as a unique symbol of tribal culture and brotherhood.

She urged citizens to draw inspiration from their rich heritage while embracing development, ensuring that progress does not come at the cost of cultural identity.

Bastar’s Role in Viksit Bharat

Noting that Bastar is blessed with abundant natural resources and hardworking people, President Murmu encouraged the youth to take full advantage of state and central government schemes.

She said the progress and prosperity of Bastar are vital for the development of Chhattisgarh and for achieving the goal of Viksit Bharat.
