President Murmu Marks 125 Years of Raj Bhavan Nainital

RR Team, November 4, 2025November 4, 2025
President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, graced a special ceremony commemorating 125 years of the establishment of Raj Bhavan, Nainital. The event marked a significant milestone in the history of the hill state’s governance and heritage architecture.

Raj Bhavans: Symbols of Democracy and Governance

Addressing the gathering, President Murmu emphasized that Raj Bhavans are more than just official residences  they are living symbols of India’s federal democratic structure. “Just as Rashtrapati Bhavan represents the Republic at the national level, Raj Bhavans represent the democratic ethos of the states,” she said.

The President highlighted that after the formation of Uttarakhand in 2000, the Raj Bhavan at Nainital became deeply intertwined with the state’s growth and identity. The colonial-era building, constructed 125 years ago, has since evolved into a center of governance, policy reflection, and cultural pride.

Governor’s Role in Upholding Constitutional Ideals

President Murmu underlined the constitutional significance of the Governor’s position within India’s parliamentary democracy. She noted that the framers of the Constitution had carefully defined the powers and responsibilities of Governors to maintain balance between state administration and the Constitution’s guiding principles.

She urged all members of the Governor’s Secretariat to embody values such as simplicity, humility, moral integrity, and sensitivity while discharging their duties. “The people of the state view Raj Bhavan as a sacred space. It must reflect the highest standards of ethics and public service,” she remarked.

Uttarakhand’s Journey of Progress and Prosperity

The President commended Uttarakhand’s achievements since its inception, praising the state’s progress in sustainable development, tourism, and social welfare. She expressed confidence that under the leadership of the Governor and his team, the Raj Bhavan would continue to inspire the people and serve as a guiding institution for governance and civic responsibility.

She also encouraged continued efforts to preserve the architectural legacy and ecological surroundings of Raj Bhavan, which remains one of the most scenic and historically significant buildings in northern India.

A Legacy of Service and Heritage

Built in 1899, Raj Bhavan Nainital, also known as the “Governor’s House,” reflects the Gothic architectural style reminiscent of Buckingham Palace. Over the decades, it has hosted numerous dignitaries and witnessed key moments in Uttarakhand’s administrative evolution.

As the historic building enters its 125th year, the event served as both a tribute to its colonial past and a reaffirmation of its role in India’s democratic present. The commemoration included cultural performances and exhibitions highlighting the journey of the Raj Bhavan and its contribution to the state’s identity.
