President Murmu Takes Historic Rafale Sortie in Ambala

Ambala, 29 October 2025: President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday carried out a 30-minute sortie in a Rafale fighter jet from the Air Force Station Ambala in Haryana, reaching altitudes of around 15,000 ft and speeds of about 700 km/h. This historic sortie makes her the first President of India to fly in two distinct fighter jets of the Indian Air Force (IAF), following her 2023 flight in a Sukhoi-30 MKI.

Historic Milestone for the Presidency and IAF

Today’s sortie signifies more than a ceremonial event. The Rafale jets, inducted into the IAF’s 17 Squadron Golden Arrows at Ambala in 2020, are flagship platforms for India’s aerial prowess.  By flying aboard one, the President underscored her role as the Commander-in-Chief of India’s armed forces and signalled support for indigenous defence growth.

Flight Details and Ceremony

The sortie, piloted by Group Captain Amit Gehani, commanding officer of the 17 Squadron, covered approximately 200 km over Haryana and lasted about 30 minutes. Prior to take-off, President Murmu donned a G-suit and received a ceremonial guard of honour at the air station.

Recognising Women in Defence

During the event, the President met Wing Commander Shivangi Singh, India’s only woman Rafale pilot, highlighting the increasing presence of women in combat roles within the IAF. The meeting also served to counter earlier misinformation about her capture during Operation Sindoor.

Impact on India’s Defence Narrative

The Rafale fleet has been central to India’s strategic reach, notably during Operation Sindoor in which these aircraft played a key role. President Murmu’s flight aboard such a jet symbolises Indian air-power readiness and alignment between civilian leadership and the military.

President’s Reflection

In the visitor’s book at Ambala Air Force Station, the President wrote: “The sortie on Rafale is an unforgettable experience for me. This first flight on the potent Rafale aircraft has instilled in me a renewed sense of pride in the nation’s defence capabilities. I congratulate the Indian Air Force and the entire team of Air Force Station, Ambala for organising this sortie successfully.”

Looking Ahead

As India continues ramping up its defence modernization, high-profile events such as this one serve multiple purposes: signalling internal morale, showcasing capability to allies and adversaries, and reinforcing the role of inclusivity both in leadership and defence roles. President Murmu’s Ambala sortie marks a strong message: India’s skies and its defence personnel are firmly aligned with the nation’s path to self-reliance and strategic strength.
