Operational Demonstration at Sea

During the extended sortie, President Murmu interacted closely with the officers and sailors of INS Vaghsheer and observed various operational demonstrations conducted by the crew. The experience offered her a firsthand view of submarine operations, including underwater manoeuvres and combat-readiness drills.
Naval officials said the President keenly observed the professionalism, discipline and coordination displayed by the crew while performing demanding tasks in a challenging sub-surface environment. Such interactions, they noted, significantly boost morale and reaffirm the confidence of service personnel.
Second President to Undertake Submarine Sortie
With this voyage, President Droupadi Murmu became only the second President of India to undertake a submarine sortie. The first was former President Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, whose association with India’s strategic and defence programmes remains deeply respected.
The President’s embarkation aboard INS Vaghsheer is also her maiden visit onboard an indigenous Kalvari-class submarine, underlining India’s growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing and advanced naval technology.
Symbol of Indigenous Naval Strength
INS Vaghsheer is part of India’s indigenously built Kalvari-class submarines, which form a critical component of the Indian Navy’s underwater warfare capability. These submarines are designed to undertake intelligence gathering, surveillance, special operations and anti-ship and anti-submarine warfare.
The President’s visit reflects the continued emphasis on operational engagement by the highest constitutional authority with India’s armed forces. In November 2024, she had also witnessed an operational demonstration by the Indian Navy onboard the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, reinforcing a consistent pattern of direct interaction with frontline platforms.
President’s Message Praising Crew Readiness
After completing the sortie, President Murmu recorded her impressions in the visitors’ book, describing the experience as deeply special and inspiring. She wrote that sailing, diving and spending time with the sailors and officers of INS Vaghsheer gave her valuable insight into the demanding nature of submarine operations.
Referring to the successful weapon firings and complex operational drills carried out during the demonstration, the President praised the crew’s exceptional preparedness and unwavering dedication. She highlighted that the submarine’s performance truly reflected its motto, “Veerta Varchasva Vijaya”, signifying courage, dominance and victory.
Strong Assurance on Combat Readiness
President Murmu stated that witnessing the discipline, confidence and enthusiasm of the Vaghsheer crew assured her that India’s submarines and the Indian Navy are fully combat-ready to counter any threat under all circumstances. Her remarks were seen as a strong endorsement of the Navy’s operational preparedness amid evolving maritime security challenges.
Defence experts believe such high-level engagements reinforce civil-military trust and highlight the importance of maritime power in safeguarding India’s national interests.
