President Droupadi Murmu visited the Siachen base camp on Thursday, paying tribute at the Siachen War Memorial, which honors the soldiers and officers who have sacrificed their lives since the launch of Operation Meghdoot on April 13, 1984. The visit, according to a statement from Rashtrapati Bhavan, also included an address to the troops stationed at the base.
During her address, President Murmu expressed her pride as the supreme commander of the armed forces, acknowledging the soldiers’ bravery. She emphasized that the entire nation salutes their courage and dedication in defending the country under extreme conditions.
Since the beginning of Operation Meghdoot, the President noted, the Indian Armed Forces have steadfastly maintained control over the Siachen region, despite the harsh environment. She highlighted the extraordinary challenges faced by the troops, including sub-zero temperatures as low as minus 50 degrees and heavy snowfall. Despite these conditions, the soldiers continue their mission with unwavering commitment and vigilance, showcasing remarkable sacrifice and endurance in safeguarding the nation.
President Murmu reminded the soldiers that all Indians are aware of their courage and deeply respect their service.
Earlier in the day, President Murmu was welcomed by Ladakh Lt. Governor Brigadier B D Mishra upon her arrival at Thoise Airfield.
Siachen Glacier, located in the Karakoram Range, is the highest military-occupied region in the world. The Indian Army secured control of the glacier in April 1984 during Operation Meghdoot, and it remains a critical strategic region for the country.
