What is Rashtrapati Tapovan?
Located on Rajpur Road in Dehradun, Rashtrapati Tapovan spans 19 acres and is envisioned as a spiritual and ecological retreat. It is home to:
- 117 species of plants
- 52 species of butterflies
- 41 species of birds
- 7 species of wild mammals, including protected species
The landscape includes bamboo groves and lush forest cover, offering a peaceful escape rooted in biodiversity.
Heritage at Rashtrapati Niketan
Originally built as a summer camp for the Governor General’s Bodyguard in 1838, Rashtrapati Niketan covers 21 acres. It houses:
- Historic structures
- Lily ponds
- Stables and orchards
This estate has now been made accessible to citizens, starting July 1, 2025.
Rashtrapati Udyan: India’s First Net-Zero Public Park
The upcoming 132-acre Rashtrapati Udyan will be fully accessible to Divyangjan and designed as a Net-Zero Energy Park. It will include wellness spaces, cultural zones, and areas for civic engagement.
Book on Biodiversity Launched
The President released a biodiversity compendium covering all three sites. The book documents over 300 species of flora and 170 species of fauna, making it a valuable educational resource for nature lovers and researchers alike.
President’s Message on Inclusivity
While visiting the National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Visual Disabilities, President Murmu met with students and faculty. She visited the Science Lab, Computer Lab, and an exhibition showcasing assistive technologies.
In her address, she emphasized, “The progress of a nation can be judged by how it treats its persons with disabilities.” She commended Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan for creating accessible infrastructure across the country.
She added that with advanced technology, disabled individuals can actively participate in society. “Inclusive education and modern tools are critical to bridging gaps,” she said, applauding the Institute’s efforts for the holistic development of visually impaired students.
When Can the Public Visit?
The estates will be open for public tours on:
- Rashtrapati Tapovan: From June 24, 2025
- Rashtrapati Niketan: From July 1, 2025
These developments position Dehradun as a national hub for eco-tourism, inclusivity, and civic heritage.
