Prime Minister Narendra Modi Inaugurates Indian Institute of Skills (IIS) in Mumbai

RR Team, October 9, 2024October 9, 2024

Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Indian Institute of Skills (IIS) in Mumbai as part of a broader initiative involving over ₹7,600 crore in development projects for Maharashtra. This institute aims to enhance the employability of Indian youth by training 5,000 students annually in Industry 4.0 skills, focusing on areas such as factory automation, digital manufacturing, mechatronics, artificial intelligence, data analytics, and additive manufacturing.

Established through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, the IIS is a collaboration between the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Tata IIS, a section 8 company under Tata Trusts.

During the inauguration, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of instilling confidence in youth, asserting that this confidence is essential for India to emerge as a global hub for talent in sectors like education, skilling, healthcare, and software development. He reiterated the government’s commitment to aligning skills with global standards.

Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, expressed enthusiasm for the IIS, stating that it is crucial in realizing the vision of India as the “Skill Capital of the World.” He highlighted that the institute will empower youth to excel in both domestic and global markets.

Located on a 4-acre campus within the National Skill Training Institute in Chunabhatti, Mumbai, IIS will offer specialized training in key sectors, starting with six courses: Advanced Industrial Automation & Robotics, Industrial Automation Fundamentals, Advanced ARC Welding Techniques, Additive Manufacturing, Electric Vehicle Battery Specialist, and 2&3 Wheeler EV Technician. Future plans include providing hostel facilities for students.

Chaudhary further noted the importance of strategic partnerships with leading industries to ensure that skill development remains relevant and forward-looking, enabling students to meet the demands of a rapidly changing global economy.

Mangal Prabhat Lodha, Maharashtra’s Minister for Skills, Employment, and Innovation, remarked that the IIS would be a state-of-the-art facility attracting talent globally. He emphasized the Prime Minister’s commitment to prioritizing upskilling and supporting ongoing initiatives.

The institute will feature advanced laboratories developed in collaboration with over 15 global and Indian Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), ensuring that students gain practical experience with real industry equipment. Graduates will be well-prepared to enter emerging industries, including electric vehicles and robotics.

In addition to core training, IIS will offer short-term courses in collaboration with industry partners, such as Industrial Robotics with Fanuc India and Culinary & Core Housekeeping with Taj Skyline. With its innovative approach and strong industry connections, Tata IIS Mumbai is set to become a leading institution for skill development in India.

Venu Srinivasan, Chairman of Tata IIS, highlighted the growing need for a skilled workforce in India’s economy, stating that equipping youth with practical skills will enable them to lead independent and dignified lives while contributing to national development.

The event was attended by numerous dignitaries, including Atul Kumar Tiwari, Secretary of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, and key figures from Tata Trusts and Tata companies, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of skill development in India.
