Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme: Empowering India’s Youth with Industry Opportunities

RR Team, March 21, 2025March 21, 2025

The Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme (PMIS) is emerging as a game-changer for India’s youth, bridging the gap between academic education and industry requirements. Launched on October 3, 2024, this ambitious initiative aims to provide one crore young Indians with 12-month paid internships in leading companies over the next five years. By integrating theoretical learning with hands-on experience, the scheme envisions India as the “Skill Capital of the World,” preparing its workforce for the demands of a rapidly evolving global economy.

To enhance accessibility, a dedicated PMIS Portal and mobile app have been introduced, enabling applicants to filter opportunities based on district, state, sector, and location radius. The app, launched by the Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs, Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman, on March 17, 2025, allows candidates to apply for up to three internships simultaneously, offering them greater flexibility. With over 80 outreach programs conducted across colleges, ITIs, and Rozgar Melas, alongside extensive digital campaigns, the government is actively driving awareness to ensure that more young individuals can benefit from this initiative. Additionally, a referral program has been introduced, rewarding users for bringing more eligible candidates into the fold.

The scheme, initially launched as a pilot, is now scaling up rapidly. In its second phase, PMIS is offering 1.18 lakh internships across all 735 districts, with participation from 327 reputed companies. The opportunities span diverse industries, including Automobile, Banking & Finance, FMCG, Manufacturing, Metals & Mining, and more, catering to candidates from various educational backgrounds. The application window for this phase remains open until March 31, 2025, with interested individuals encouraged to apply via the PMIS mobile app or the official portal.

Internship roles are available across multiple qualification levels, with 37,000 positions for graduates, 23,000 for ITI holders, 18,000 for diploma holders, 15,000 for 12th-pass candidates, and 25,000 for those who have completed the 10th grade. The wide range of industry partnerships ensures that interns gain valuable exposure and work experience, significantly improving their employability prospects. Companies from key sectors such as Healthcare, IT & Software Development, Telecom, Retail, Pharmaceuticals, and Infrastructure are actively participating, reinforcing the government’s commitment to skill development.

More than just a workforce development initiative, PMIS represents a long-term investment in the nation’s future. By equipping young Indians with industry-relevant skills and professional experience, the scheme is fostering confidence, innovation, and entrepreneurship. As PMIS expands, it is set to redefine India’s human capital, ensuring that the country’s youth are not just job seekers but future leaders and contributors to global progress.
