The Quad nations — the U.S., India, Australia, and Japan — are set to announce a series of significant initiatives during their summit on September 21, 2024. Hosted by U.S. President Joe Biden, the meeting will focus on strengthening partnerships in the Indo-Pacific and beyond.
Among the key announcements, the U.S. Coast Guard will collaborate with its Indian, Australian, and Japanese counterparts, hosting them onboard its vessels in the Indo-Pacific. The initiative will later see other Quad nations hosting similar joint exercises. According to a senior Biden administration official, this move is aimed at promoting regional peace and stability rather than being a military alliance.
China and North Korea will also be prominent discussion points, with the summit’s joint statement expected to include strong language addressing the South China Sea and other regional security concerns.
Another major initiative is President Biden’s “Cancer Moonshot” program, which will focus on cancer screening, vaccines, and treatment, with support from all Quad nations. This project is personal to Biden, whose son passed away from brain cancer in 2015.
In addition, the Quad Fellowship, initially launched in 2021 to support STEM students from Quad countries, will expand to include participants from Southeast Asia. This program allows students to further their education in the U.S.
Other projects include the establishment of a Quad logistics network for disaster relief, as well as initiatives to improve maritime domain awareness, particularly in the Indian Ocean. This will involve new training programs and the deployment of technology to monitor unregulated fishing and other maritime challenges.
These efforts reflect the Quad’s continued commitment to enhancing cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, with a focus on humanitarian assistance, regional stability, and technological advancements.
