Rahul Gandhi Asks Modi: Were 5 Jets Shot Down?

RR Team, July 19, 2025July 19, 2025
New Delhi, July 19, 2025 — A major political storm erupted on Saturday after former US President Donald Trump claimed that five jets were shot down during the India-Pakistan conflict, known as Operation Sindoor. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi immediately hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding clarity and transparency from the government.

Trump’s Stunning Revelation

Speaking at a rally in Ohio, Trump made a bold statement. He claimed that during India’s military operation in May, five fighter jets were shot down in a high-stakes standoff with Pakistan.

“I spoke to PM Modi. There were five jets down, and we had to talk about ceasefire. It was very close,” Trump said, according to video footage that has now gone viral on social media platforms.

The clip sparked political chaos in India. Until now, the Indian government had maintained a tight-lipped stance on the exact details of the air conflict.

Rahul Gandhi Demands Answers

Shortly after the video surfaced, Rahul Gandhi took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter). In a pointed message, he asked, “Modi ji, what is the truth about the five jets? The country has the right to know!”

He also tagged the video clip of Trump, adding fuel to a rising political firestorm. As Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Gandhi’s statement carries significant political weight, especially during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament.

Congress Rallies Behind the Statement

The Congress Party has now officially demanded a statement from the Prime Minister during the current session. Senior leader Jairam Ramesh echoed Gandhi’s call and accused the Modi government of withholding crucial information from the public.

“If five jets were indeed shot down, that’s not a minor skirmish. That’s a full-scale escalation. The nation deserves an honest explanation,” said Ramesh at a press briefing.

Government Maintains Silence

So far, the PMO and Ministry of Defence have not issued any official clarification regarding Trump’s claims. Ministry officials, when approached by reporters, refused to comment on “speculative international remarks.”

However, defence analysts believe that if the claim holds weight, it could change the narrative around Operation Sindoor, which has largely been portrayed as a strategic surgical response to a terror threat.

Background on Operation Sindoor

Operation Sindoor was launched in May 2025 after intelligence reports indicated a possible terror infiltration backed by Pakistan-based groups. While the official brief from the Indian Defence Ministry spoke of targeted strikes on terror camps, there was no mention of aerial dogfights or jet losses.

This is the first time any world leader has publicly mentioned aerial combat losses related to the operation.

International Reactions

Pakistan has not commented on Trump’s statement, although unofficial military sources in Islamabad hinted at “escalated air activity” during May. Analysts believe that Trump’s statement may have been based on classified diplomatic discussions from his previous presidency.

Former Indian diplomats, including Shivshankar Menon, have urged the government to either confirm or debunk the claim to maintain international credibility.

Why Transparency Matters

The issue has raised critical questions about government accountability, especially in matters of national security. With social media driving public discourse, the absence of official information has led to confusion, speculation, and public anxiety.

Experts argue that transparency in military operations, while sensitive, is necessary in democracies. Citizens must be informed—not misled—especially when international figures like Trump drop bombshells on public forums.

Conclusion: Truth Must Prevail

Whether Trump’s claim is exaggerated or accurate, it has triggered a serious political and public debate. The ball is now in Prime Minister Modi’s court.

With the Monsoon Session underway, the government may be compelled to address the issue in Parliament. If not, the opposition is unlikely to let it rest.

Until then, the question remains unanswered: Were five jets really shot down during Operation Sindoor?
