Rajnath Singh Empowers CDS for Unified Military Orders

New Delhi, June 25, 2025: In a major reform, Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh has authorised the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and Secretary, Department of Military Affairs (DMA) to issue Joint Orders for all three military services.

Earlier, each service issued separate instructions, even for shared matters. The new system streamlines command across the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

One Unified Order for Three Forces

The first Joint Order—titled “Approval, Promulgation and Numbering of Joint Instructions and Joint Orders”—was released on June 25, 2025.

It focuses on cutting procedural delays, removing redundancies, and promoting coordination. The move brings clarity and efficiency to tri-service operations.

Boosting Military Synergy

India aims to enhance its military readiness. This reform pushes for quicker execution of joint strategies.

It brings India closer to its goal of creating Theatre Commands, where forces work together under one command in battle zones.

Driving Defence Transformation

This step is part of a bigger plan under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. Reforms like the creation of the CDS role and the Agnipath scheme are helping modernize India’s military structure.

Promoting Make in India in Defence

The CDS-led Joint Orders help unify procurement, planning, and training strategies. This aligns with the ‘Make in India’ initiative in defence.

Expert Opinions Welcome the Move

Military analysts say this step was long overdue. Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Sanjay Kulkarni called it “a turning point for real military jointness.”

A Clear Path Forward

This change lays the foundation for better communication, stronger unity, and more reliable military operations.

It also ensures faster responses during emergencies and better use of advanced technologies.

Conclusion

The new Joint Orders system signals a bold shift in India’s defence strategy. It promotes jointness, speed, and clarity—key traits for modern militaries.

With this, India takes one more step towards building a future-ready Armed Forces, rooted in unity and driven by purpose.
