Raksha Bandhan 2025: Date, Muhurat & Rituals

RR Team, August 9, 2025August 9, 2025

Raksha Bandhan is one of India’s most loved festivals. It celebrates the special bond between brothers and sisters. In 2025, the festival will be observed on Saturday, August 9, with great joy and traditions across India and by Indians worldwide.

When is Raksha Bandhan 2025?

Raksha Bandhan falls on Shravan Purnima. This year, the Purnima Tithi begins on August 8 at 2:12 PM and ends on August 9 at 1:24 PM. The Shubh Muhurat for tying the Rakhi is from 5:47 AM to 1:24 PM on August 9.

Astrologers confirm that the Bhadra Kaal will not interfere with the celebrations. This means families can observe the rituals without hesitation.

Why is Raksha Bandhan Celebrated?

The name “Raksha Bandhan” means “bond of protection.” The festival symbolises love, respect, and responsibility between siblings. Sisters tie a sacred thread or Rakhi on their brothers’ wrists. They pray for their brothers’ health, happiness, and success. In return, brothers vow to protect their sisters and often give gifts as a gesture of love.

According to Hindu mythology, Draupadi tied a piece of cloth around Lord Krishna’s wrist when he hurt himself. In return, Krishna promised to protect her always. This act is considered the earliest example of Raksha Bandhan’s spirit.

Raksha Bandhan 2025 Puja Rituals

  • Wake up early and take a holy bath.
  • Wear clean and traditional clothes.
  • Perform a small puja to Lord Ganesha, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva.
  • Prepare special dishes like kheer, poori-sabzi, halwa, and raita.
  • Offer bhog to the deities before starting the Rakhi ceremony.
  • Decorate the Rakhi thali with rice, roli, sweets, and Rakhi threads.
  • Apply tilak on your brother’s forehead, tie the Rakhi, and offer sweets.
  • Brothers present gifts and take blessings from sisters.

Significance in Modern Times

Today, Raksha Bandhan is not limited to blood relations. People tie Rakhis to cousins, friends, and even colleagues as a symbol of respect and goodwill. The festival bridges distances, with families sending Rakhis and gifts through courier and online platforms.

Government postal services like India Post run special “Rakhi Post” schemes to ensure timely delivery. E-commerce platforms also see a surge in Rakhi gift hampers during this period.

Celebrations Across India

In North India, the festival is celebrated with family feasts and traditional sweets. In Maharashtra, it coincides with Narali Purnima, where fishermen offer coconuts to the sea for safe voyages. In West Bengal and Odisha, it is linked with Jhulan Purnima, honouring Lord Krishna and Radha.

Indian communities abroad, especially in the USA, UK, and Australia, host Rakhi events to keep traditions alive among younger generations.

Tips for a Memorable Raksha Bandhan 2025

  • Choose eco-friendly, handmade Rakhis to support artisans.
  • Send personalised gifts like photo frames or hand-written letters.
  • If you can’t meet in person, celebrate virtually through video calls.
  • Cook your sibling’s favourite dish to make the day special.
