Focus of the Visit
The key agenda of Shri Singh’s visit will include high-level bilateral discussions with his Australian counterpart, Mr Richard Marles, aimed at strengthening defence ties and exploring new initiatives. The Raksha Mantri will also chair a business roundtable in Sydney, bringing together industry leaders from both nations to promote strategic cooperation and investment opportunities.
In addition, Shri Singh is scheduled to meet other senior Australian national leaders, providing an opportunity to further consolidate political, defence, and economic relations.
Agreements and Defence Cooperation
During the visit, three key agreements are expected to be signed, focusing on enhanced information sharing, maritime domain collaboration, and joint defence activities. These agreements will reinforce ongoing military-to-military interactions, capacity-building initiatives, training programmes, ship visits, and bilateral exercises.
The defence partnership between India and Australia has grown substantially since being elevated from a Strategic Partnership in 2009 to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2020, reflecting deep mutual trust and shared strategic interests.
Historical and Strategic Context
India and Australia share common values as pluralistic, Westminster-style democracies with strong Commonwealth traditions. Over the years, growing economic engagement, high-level political interactions, and robust people-to-people connections—including the presence of Indian students in Australian universities and tourism and sporting ties—have strengthened this enduring bilateral relationship.
Mr Richard Marles last visited India in June 2025, where he met Shri Rajnath Singh and Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, reinforcing continuity in the strategic dialogue between the two nations.

Shri Rajnath Singh’s visit is significant not only for marking five years of the CSP but also for expanding India-Australia defence cooperation in areas critical to regional security, including maritime surveillance and intelligence sharing. The business roundtable will provide an additional platform to explore private sector collaboration in defence and related industries, aligning economic and strategic interests for both nations.
