Rath Yatra 2025: Date, Rituals, Route, Significance

Preparations are in full swing in Puri, Odisha for the much-awaited Jagannath Rath Yatra 2025, also known as the Chariot Festival or Shree Gundicha Yatra. The sacred procession draws lakhs of devotees from across India and the world. Here’s everything you need to know—date, time, rituals, and significance.

📅 Rath Yatra 2025 Date and Timings

As per Drik Panchang, the Rath Yatra 2025 will take place on Friday, June 27, during Shukla Paksha Dwitiya Tithi of Ashadha month in the Hindu calendar.

  • Dwitiya Tithi Begins: 1:24 PM, June 26
  • Dwitiya Tithi Ends: 11:19 AM, June 27

🛕 Ritual Calendar of Rath Yatra 2025

The grand celebration spans nine days, starting with the Rath Yatra and concluding with Niladri Bijay.

  • Anavasara: June 13 – June 26
  • Gundicha Marjana: June 26
  • Rath Yatra: June 27
  • Hera Panchami: July 1
  • Bahuda Yatra: July 4
  • Suna Besha & Niladri Bijay: July 5

🌟 Significance of Jagannath Rath Yatra

The Rath Yatra symbolizes Lord Jagannath’s divine journey to his aunt’s temple, Gundicha Mandir. As described in the Skanda Purana, Lord Jagannath, along with his siblings—Balabhadra and Subhadra—leaves the sanctum of the Puri temple to give darshan to all devotees, especially those who can’t enter the main temple.

🚩 ISKCON Rath Yatra Dates

ISKCON Prayagraj will hold its Rath Yatra on June 29, Sunday, for wider participation. The procession begins at Hira Halwai Crossing at 4 PM and ends at KP ground. The route includes Subhash Chauraha and Hanuman Mandir.

🌍 Rath Yatra Celebrated Worldwide

The Rath Yatra is not limited to India. Recently, ISKCON Scotland held a colorful procession in Edinburgh. Indian embassy officials and the city’s Lord Provost participated, emphasizing India’s rich cultural outreach globally.

🙏 What Makes Rath Yatra Unique?

Unlike most temple deities, Lord Jagannath comes out of his shrine during this festival. Devotees pull massive chariots with ropes, singing bhajans and chanting. The entire city of Puri transforms into a divine spectacle.

📌 Travel Tips for Pilgrims

  • Book train/bus tickets early to avoid last-minute hassles.
  • Stay hydrated—June weather in Odisha can be humid.
  • Respect local customs and keep the temple premises clean.
