RBI Receives Bomb Threat in Russian Language, Mumbai Police Launches Investigation

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) received a bomb threat on Friday, marking the second such threat in less than a month. The threat, written in Russian, was reportedly sent via email to the bank’s official website.

Upon receiving the complaint, the Mumbai Police initiated an investigation and registered a case against an unknown individual at the Mata Ramabai Marg (MRA Marg) police station. The Zone 1 Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) confirmed the incident, stating, “A threatening email was received on the official website of the Reserve Bank of India. The email, written in Russian, warned of an explosion at the bank. A case has been filed, and an investigation is ongoing.”

Investigators are also probing whether the email was sent using a VPN connection to hide the sender’s real IP address and location.

This incident comes shortly after Sanjay Malhotra took over as the 26th Governor of the RBI, succeeding Shaktikanta Das, who stepped down after completing six years in office. Malhotra, an IAS officer from Rajasthan, was appointed by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

This bomb threat follows a series of similar incidents in India. Earlier on Friday, at least six schools in Delhi received bomb threats via email, prompting authorities to conduct a multi-agency search of the premises. These recent threats come after 44 schools in Delhi received similar messages on December 9, which were later declared hoaxes by the police.
