Reason Behind Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Missing Bihar Match

RR Team, December 26, 2025
Bihar’s teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was conspicuously absent from his team’s Vijay Hazare Trophy match against Manipur, sparking curiosity among cricket followers across the country. At a time when the 14-year-old is rewriting domestic cricket history, his omission from the playing XI was not due to injury, loss of form, or team strategy. Instead, it was for a reason far bigger than cricket alone  national recognition at the highest level.
Sooryavanshi travelled to New Delhi to receive the prestigious Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar, India’s highest civilian honour for children. The award ceremony, held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, brought together some of the country’s most exceptional young achievers across fields such as sports, innovation, bravery, science, and social service.

A Rare Honour for a Rare Talent

According to his childhood coach Manish Ojha, Sooryavanshi had to report early in the morning for official engagements related to the award, making it impossible for him to feature in Bihar’s Vijay Hazare Trophy fixture on Friday. The teenager reached the national capital on Wednesday and remained unavailable for the remainder of the tournament phase.

At the ceremony, President Droupadi Murmu felicitated the awardees, followed by a special interaction with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. For a cricketer still at the very beginning of his journey, the moment marked an extraordinary milestone one that very few athletes experience even after decades in sport.

Record-Breaking Performance That Stunned Indian Cricket

Sooryavanshi’s selection for the Bal Puraskar comes on the back of a performance that sent shockwaves through India’s domestic cricket circuit. In Bihar’s opening Vijay Hazare Trophy match against Arunachal Pradesh, the left-handed batter produced one of the most astonishing innings in List A history.

He smashed 190 runs off just 84 balls, hammering 16 fours and 15 sixes in a breathtaking display of power and timing. His century came in only 36 deliveries, making him the youngest centurion ever in List A cricket. Bihar, riding on his innings, posted a world-record total of 574 for 6 in their allotted 50 overs.

Balancing Cricket and National Recognition

While missing competitive matches is never easy for a young athlete, those close to Sooryavanshi believe the recognition will only strengthen his mental framework. The Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar is awarded annually to children aged between 5 and 18 who demonstrate exceptional talent and dedication in their respective fields.

For Sooryavanshi, the honour acknowledges not just a single innings, but a growing body of work that has marked him as one of the brightest young prospects Indian cricket has seen in recent years. His rapid rise has also sparked debates among former cricketers about competition levels and player development at the domestic stage.

Next Stop: India Under-19 and World Cup Dreams

Following the award ceremony, Sooryavanshi is expected to link up with the India Under-19 squad as preparations intensify for the upcoming ICC Under-19 World Cup, scheduled to begin in Zimbabwe on January 15. The team management is reportedly keen to integrate the youngster carefully, ensuring his growth remains steady and sustainable.

As Indian cricket watches closely, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s journey now stands at the intersection of talent, opportunity, and responsibility. Missing a Vijay Hazare Trophy match may raise eyebrows, but receiving the nation’s highest civilian honour for children is a moment that underscores just how special his story already is.
