Record Fertilizer Supply Secured for Farmers 2024–25

RR Team, January 16, 2026January 17, 2026
The Government of India has ensured record availability of fertilizers for farmers during the agricultural year 2024–25, providing a major boost to uninterrupted farming operations across the country. Through coordinated planning, efficient logistics, and continuous monitoring, fertilizer supplies remained well above the estimated national requirement, ensuring that no region faced shortages.

This achievement reflects the Centre’s sustained focus on supporting farmers and safeguarding agricultural productivity, especially during critical sowing seasons when timely fertilizer availability is crucial.

Supply Exceeds National Requirement

According to official data, the estimated national requirement of fertilizers for 2024–25 stood at around 152.50 crore bags, equivalent to 722.04 lakh tonnes. Against this demand, the government ensured an availability of approximately 176.79 crore bags, or 834.64 lakh tonnes, creating a comfortable surplus buffer.

This surplus availability helped stabilize supplies during peak agricultural periods and prevented disruptions caused by regional demand fluctuations or logistical challenges.

Strong Coordination Across Agencies

The record availability was achieved through close coordination among multiple stakeholders, including the Indian Railways, port authorities, state governments, and fertilizer manufacturing and marketing companies. Each agency played a defined role in ensuring fertilizers moved seamlessly from production and import points to farmers.

The Indian Railways accorded priority to fertilizer rakes, enabling faster transportation across states. This ensured that fertilizers reached consumption centres promptly, even during periods of high logistical demand.

Efficient Port Operations and Distribution

Port authorities facilitated quick unloading of imported fertilizers and ensured smooth evacuation from ports to inland destinations. This helped avoid congestion and delays, particularly during the peak import months.

At the same time, the government strengthened storage and distribution mechanisms at state and district levels. Improved inventory planning and coordination with state agriculture departments ensured last-mile delivery to farmers in a timely manner.

Continuous Monitoring and Review

Regular review meetings with fertilizer companies were held to assess demand-supply positions across regions. Any emerging supply issues were promptly addressed through corrective measures, including diversion of stocks and expedited transportation.

Officials closely monitored consumption patterns to ensure equitable distribution and prevent localized shortages. This proactive approach ensured stability throughout the agricultural year.

Relief and Stability for Farmers

As a result of these sustained efforts, farmers across the country benefitted from timely access to fertilizers, allowing them to plan crop operations without uncertainty. Adequate availability also helped curb panic buying and ensured balanced use of fertilizers.

The Department of Fertilizers highlighted that maintaining availability above demand is critical for safeguarding national food security and supporting farmers’ incomes.

Aligned with Agricultural Growth Goals

The achievement aligns with the government’s broader objective of strengthening agricultural infrastructure and input management. Ensuring reliable access to fertilizers remains a cornerstone of India’s agricultural policy.
