The International Buddhist Confederation (IBC), in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, organised the two-day summit from 24-25 January 2026 under the theme “Collective Wisdom, United Voice, and Mutual Coexistence.” The Republic Day Parade served as a platform to convey India’s message of peaceful conflict resolution, addressing global inequalities and ecological challenges.
Ven Shartse Khensur Rinpoche Jangchup Choeden, Secretary General of IBC, remarked, “India will display its strength, yet it is the land of Buddha Dhamma, spreading peace, love, and kindness globally. Compassion and care are needed today, and friendly coexistence is paramount.”
Shri Abhijit Halder, Director General of IBC, highlighted the enduring influence of Buddhist principles on the Indian Constitution, noting that ideals of equality, compassion, and non-violence remain central to the nation’s democratic fabric. He added that the Buddhist Sangha historically provided a model for participatory democracy, influencing modern parliamentary procedures in India.
A Parade of Might and Compassion
The Republic Day Parade displayed India’s Armed Forces, naval and air power, and armoured equipment alongside the assembled monks and nuns. This striking contrast underscored the nation’s dual commitment to strength and peace, sending a clear message that Dhamma—the Buddhist path of compassion—is essential for global conflict resolution.
Dr Damenda Porage, Deputy Secretary General of IBC from Sri Lanka, said, “Buddha Dhamma is an indispensable heritage of India. It reached our country along with artisans, inspiring a spiritual renaissance. India stands as a beacon, demonstrating strength with kindness.”
Global Participation and Cultural Diplomacy
The Global Buddhist Summit brought together more than 800 delegates from 40 countries, including 200 overseas participants and around 100 representing the Buddhist Sangha. Diplomats, academicians, scholars, and practitioners from India also attended, strengthening international dialogue on peace, social harmony, and cultural diplomacy.
The summit and Republic Day celebrations combined military precision with spiritual elegance, portraying India’s philosophy that strength must coexist with compassion and that progress is inseparable from social responsibility.
