Republic Day Weekend: Chennai’s Offbeat Trips & Winter Treat

RR Team, January 10, 2026January 10, 2026
The Republic Day long weekend offers the perfect opportunity for Chennai residents to slow down, step out of routine, and rediscover the city’s quieter charms. Beyond crowded malls and highways, several offbeat destinations within and around Chennai blend culture, nature, and recreation. Paired with winter’s seasonal flavours, the weekend becomes an ideal mix of travel and comfort.

From heritage museums and urban forests to quirky indoor attractions and hidden waterfalls, Chennai’s lesser-known spots promise refreshing experiences without long-distance travel. Completing the getaway mood is a wholesome winter dessert that celebrates seasonal Indian produce.

Offbeat Places Near Chennai for a Short Escape

Located on the city’s southern edge, Arignar Anna Zoological Park in Vandalur remains one of Asia’s largest zoos. Spread across vast green landscapes, it offers visitors the chance to observe wildlife in natural-style enclosures while learning about conservation efforts. It is particularly popular with families seeking an educational yet relaxed outing.

For a dramatic contrast to Chennai’s tropical climate, Snow Kingdom in Injambakkam delivers a quirky experience. This indoor snow park allows visitors to enjoy sledding, snow play, and sub-zero temperatures, making it a unique stop for children and first-time visitors.

Green Spaces Within the City

Semmozhi Poonga, located in the heart of Chennai, is a calm botanical retreat showcasing over 500 species of plants. Well-maintained pathways, landscaped gardens, and water features make it a favourite among morning walkers, photographers, and those seeking a peaceful break from traffic and noise.

Another rare urban sanctuary is Guindy National Park. As one of the few national parks situated within city limits in India, it offers short nature trails amid native flora and fauna. The park serves as a reminder of Chennai’s ecological heritage.

Hidden Natural and Cultural Gems

For travellers willing to venture slightly beyond city limits, Thaiyur Mini Waterfall near Kelambakkam provides a serene, lesser-known escape. Though small, the waterfall’s natural setting makes it ideal for quiet reflection and photography, especially after light winter showers.

Chetpet Ecopark offers a balanced mix of recreation and relaxation. Built around a restored lake, it features walking tracks, boating facilities, and family-friendly spaces, making it suitable for visitors of all age groups.

Culture enthusiasts can head to DakshinaChitra Heritage Museum in Muthukadu. The open-air museum showcases South Indian traditions through restored houses, craft demonstrations, and folk performances, offering an immersive cultural experience.

Quiet Beaches for Republic Day Evenings

While Marina Beach draws large crowds, Besant Nagar’s Elliot’s Beach provides a calmer seaside atmosphere. Long walks, local street food, and sunset views make it a preferred spot for those seeking a quieter coastal experience during the holiday weekend.

Such urban escapes align well with the Ministry of Tourism’s emphasis on promoting local and sustainable travel, encouraging citizens to explore nearby destinations.

A Winter Dessert to Complete the Weekend

After a day of exploration, winter calls for comforting yet healthy food. Persimmons, known in India as ramphal or amarphal, are one of the season’s most underrated fruits. Naturally sweet and creamy in texture, they lend themselves perfectly to no-bake desserts.

A simple no-bake persimmon pudding requires minimal ingredients and effort. Ripe persimmon pulp blended smooth and gently folded with fresh cream or thick yogurt creates a silky dessert without added sugar. A pinch of cinnamon or cardamom adds warmth.

Chilled for an hour and garnished with nuts or seeds, the pudding pairs beautifully with winter meals. Rich in fibre, antioxidants, and vitamins A and C, it offers a healthier alternative to traditional festive sweets.

Celebrating Republic Day the Simple Way

This Republic Day long weekend, Chennai offers the chance to slow travel locally while embracing seasonal food traditions. Whether it is a heritage walk, a forest trail, a quiet beach evening, or a homemade dessert, meaningful experiences often lie close to home.

As India marks its constitutional journey, such mindful celebrations reflect a deeper connection with culture, nature, and well-being.
