SAIL, RITES Partner on Diesel Loco Leasing & Maintenance

New Delhi: Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), a Maharatna public sector enterprise, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES), a Navratna CPSE, to improve diesel locomotive leasing and maintenance across its plants and mines. The partnership aims to enhance operational efficiency, optimize logistics, and support SAIL’s planned capacity expansions.

Boosting Logistics and Operations

SAIL operates a dedicated mini rail network within its industrial premises to transport inbound raw materials, in-process transfers, and outbound finished products. The maintenance of diesel locomotives, supplemented by wet-leased locomotives, is crucial for uninterrupted operations and efficient material handling.

Expertise of RITES

With Indian Railways transitioning to electric locomotives, RITES brings critical expertise in diesel locomotive operations and maintenance. Leveraging access to Indian Railways’ facilities, spares, and skilled manpower, RITES will ensure reliability and operational readiness of SAIL’s diesel fleet across all plants and mines.

Operational and Environmental Benefits

The collaboration is expected to enable both organizations to focus on their core strengths while optimizing costs. It also aligns with sustainability goals by contributing to reduced carbon footprint through efficient locomotive management and streamlined operations.

Official Signing Ceremony

The MoU was signed by Shri P.K. Baisakhiya, Executive Director (Operations), SAIL, and Shri Sandeep Jain, Executive Director (Technical Services), RITES, in the presence of senior officials from both organizations. This partnership reinforces the commitment of SAIL and RITES to operational excellence and sustainable logistics management.
