SAIL Supplies Steel for Bairabi-Sairang Railway in Mizoram

RR Team, September 18, 2025September 18, 2025
The Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL), a Maharatna public sector enterprise, has supplied approximately 15,000 metric tons of high-quality steel for the 51-kilometer Bairabi-Sairang railway project in Mizoram. The project was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 13th September 2025, marking a major milestone in Northeast India’s connectivity.

Steel Contribution by SAIL

For this strategic infrastructure project, SAIL provided around 10,000 metric tons of high-grade R-260 Prime rails from its flagship Bhilai Steel Plant. An additional 5,000 metric tons of plates, TMT, and structural steel were supplied from SAIL’s Bokaro, Rourkela, Bhilai, Durgapur, and Burnpur plants, ensuring the highest quality standards for the railway’s construction.

Boosting Northeast Connectivity

The Bairabi-Sairang railway underscores India’s commitment to enhancing regional connectivity. SAIL’s steel has played a crucial role in strengthening the project’s infrastructure, supporting seamless transport and economic development in Mizoram. This initiative further positions SAIL as a reliable partner in nation-building, providing durable materials for critical infrastructure.

SAIL’s Legacy in National Infrastructure

SAIL has consistently contributed to key infrastructure projects across India, including:

  • Chenab Railway Bridge
  • Jiribam–Tupul–Imphal Broad Gauge Project
  • Atal Tunnel
  • Bandra–Worli Sea Link
  • Dhola Sadiya and Bogibeel bridges

Its steel products have also supported power, hydroelectric, and border connectivity projects, highlighting SAIL’s enduring role in nation-wide development.

Significance for Mizoram and the Northeast

By enabling the Bairabi-Sairang railway, SAIL is directly contributing to the economic and social growth of Mizoram and the broader Northeast region. The railway enhances trade, passenger mobility, and integration with national markets, facilitating improved regional development and connectivity.
