Sam Pitroda Sparks Row With Felt at Home in Pakistan Remark

RR Team, September 19, 2025September 19, 2025
Senior Congress leader and Indian Overseas Congress chief Sam Pitroda has landed in the middle of another political controversy after saying he “felt at home” during his visits to Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal. Pitroda, a close aide of Rahul Gandhi, argued for a “neighbourhood-first” approach in India’s foreign policy, stressing peace and cooperation over hostility.
“They are all small, they all need help, and there’s no need to fight. Of course, there is a terrorism problem, but at the end of the day, we share a common gene pool. I’ve been to Pakistan and felt at home. I’ve been to Bangladesh, I’ve been to Nepal, and I feel at home. They look like me, talk like me, eat the same food, and enjoy my songs,” Pitroda said in an interview.

BJP’s Sharp Rebuttal

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) quickly seized upon the remarks, accusing the Congress of being soft on Pakistan. BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari said, “Rahul Gandhi’s blue-eyed boy and Congress Overseas chief Sam Pitroda says he ‘felt at home’ in Pakistan. No wonder the UPA failed to take tough action after the 26/11 attacks. Pakistan’s favourite, Congress’s chosen!”

Bhandari also linked Pitroda’s statement to recent incidents of cross-border terrorism, including the Pahalgam attack, and questioned whether any patriot could call Pakistan “home.” He reminded the public that Indian forces had responded with “Operation Sindoor” to strike back at terror bases.

Congress Faces Familiar Dilemma

Pitroda’s comments put the Congress party in a tight spot, coming months after he had previously stirred outrage with controversial remarks on China and inheritance tax. In 2024, during the Lok Sabha elections, Pitroda was forced to step down from his post, only to be reinstated later with assurances of restraint.

This latest controversy adds to the series of episodes where Pitroda’s outspoken views have overshadowed the Congress’s messaging, offering the BJP fresh ammunition to target the opposition party on national security and patriotism.

A Pattern of Controversial Remarks

Pitroda, who has long been considered a trusted Gandhi family aide, has often faced criticism for his off-the-cuff statements. His remarks on India’s diversity, foreign relations, and taxation policies have repeatedly drawn political fire. Each time, the Congress has had to walk a fine line between distancing itself and defending his intent.

While Pitroda insists his priority is peace, harmony, and regional cooperation, his political opponents argue his statements undermine India’s security concerns and national sentiment.
