Savitri Thakur, UN Envoy Discuss Women-Led Growth

RR Team, February 6, 2026February 7, 2026
Minister of State for Women and Child Development Smt. Savitri Thakur held a high-level meeting with Shri Parvathaneni Harish, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, during her official visit to New York, reaffirming India’s commitment to inclusive development, social justice and women-led growth on global platforms.

The meeting comes at a crucial time as India continues to strengthen its engagement with multilateral institutions and highlight its development priorities at the United Nations. The interaction focused on aligning national social development goals with global frameworks, particularly those impacting women, children and vulnerable communities.

Focus on Inclusive Development and Women-Led Growth

Sharing details of the interaction on social media platform X, Smt. Savitri Thakur described the meeting as productive and forward-looking. She noted that discussions revolved around India’s priorities at the United Nations, with a strong emphasis on advancing inclusive development models and strengthening women-led growth initiatives.

The exchange also covered ways to amplify India’s voice on global platforms by showcasing its grassroots-driven welfare initiatives, particularly in areas of women’s empowerment, child development and social justice. Both sides underscored the importance of collaborative international engagement to address shared social challenges.

India’s Engagement at the United Nations

Shri Parvathaneni Harish, as India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, plays a key role in articulating the country’s positions across various UN bodies. The meeting reflected India’s broader diplomatic strategy of integrating social development priorities into its global outreach.

The discussions highlighted the need for policy convergence between national missions and international commitments, particularly in areas such as gender equality, social protection and sustainable development. This approach aligns with India’s long-standing advocacy for inclusive and equitable global growth.

Leading India at the UN Commission for Social Development

Smt. Savitri Thakur is currently in New York to lead the Indian delegation at the 64th Session of the United Nations Commission for Social Development (CSocD), being held at the UN Headquarters. The session provides a key platform for member states to deliberate on global social development challenges.

India’s participation at the CSocD underscores its commitment to sharing best practices in social welfare and learning from global experiences. The delegation is expected to highlight India’s progress in women and child development, community-driven welfare models and inclusive policy frameworks.

Strengthening India’s Global Social Development Narrative

The meeting between the MoS for Women and Child Development and India’s UN envoy is seen as part of a coordinated effort to strengthen India’s narrative on social development at international forums. Emphasis was placed on ensuring that India’s development story reflects ground-level realities and measurable outcomes.

Officials familiar with the discussions said such engagements help position India as a constructive and solution-oriented partner in global development dialogues, especially on issues affecting women and children.
