Savitribai Phule Institute Gets a New Identity
In a move that blends historical recognition with forward-looking governance, the National Institute of Public Cooperation and Child Development (NIPCCD) has been renamed. It is now officially the Savitribai Phule National Institute of Women and Child Development.
Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Smt. Annpurna Devi, announced the change as a tribute to Savitribai Phule, one of India’s earliest champions of education and social justice for women.
The new identity symbolizes the government’s commitment to empowering women and children as part of its Viksit Bharat @2047 vision.
A Big Boost for Eastern India
To mark this transformation, a new Regional Centre will be inaugurated in Ranchi, Jharkhand on 4 July 2025. This centre will serve as a hub for training, research, and implementation of flagship programs in the eastern region.
It will primarily cater to four states:
-
Jharkhand
-
Bihar
-
Odisha
-
West Bengal
Earlier, functionaries from these states had to rely on centres in Guwahati or Lucknow, causing logistical difficulties. With over 7 lakh grassroots workers spread across 115 districts in these four states, this new centre will fill a long-standing gap.
Empowering Through Flagship Missions
The Ranchi Centre will support key missions of the Ministry of Women and Child Development:
The Ranchi Centre is set to become a hub for several key initiatives under the Ministry of Women and Child Development. These include Mission Shakti, which empowers women through safety and support systems; Mission Vatsalya, focusing on child protection and care; and Mission Saksham Anganwadi & Poshan 2.0, which enhances nutritional outcomes and preschool education.
It will provide structured training to Anganwadi workers, supervisors, and officials working in child protection and nutrition. A special highlight is the Advanced Diploma in Child Guidance and Counselling, which will now be easily accessible to aspirants in the region.
Decentralised and Region-Specific Training
Smt. Annpurna Devi highlighted that the new centre reflects a push for region-specific development. It will offer:
-
Tailored capacity-building programs
-
Community-specific modules
-
Easy access to in-person and online training
The aim is simple: empower the frontline workers who are the backbone of India’s women and child development missions.
Beyond Training: Research, Counselling, and More
The new facility isn’t just a training institute. It will also be a hub for:
-
Research on adolescent and child mental health
-
Field surveys and documentation
-
Counselling and outreach programs
By combining education, research, and field training under one roof, the centre is expected to have a strong impact on policymaking and execution at the grassroots level.
A National Network with a New Focus
The Savitribai Phule Institute has its headquarters in New Delhi, and existing regional centres in:
-
Bengaluru
-
Guwahati
-
Lucknow
-
Indore
-
Mohali
Now, Ranchi joins this network—bringing with it a renewed focus on decentralisation, inclusivity, and last-mile service delivery.
Conclusion
The renaming of NIPCCD and the launch of the new Ranchi centre are more than symbolic changes. They are steps toward building a future where no woman or child is left behind.
These efforts reflect a broader transformation in India’s social sector—where training, empowerment, and accessibility go hand in hand.
Under the leadership of Smt. Annpurna Devi and the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India’s roadmap toward an empowered and equitable society is becoming more grounded, regional, and inclusive.
