Sawan 2025: Somwar Vrat Dates & Fasting Guide

RR Team, July 28, 2025July 28, 2025

Shravan 2025—also known as Sawan—is a deeply spiritual month dedicated to Lord Shiva. From July 11 to July 25, 2025, millions of devotees across South and Western India will observe fasts, chant prayers, and follow strict rituals to seek the blessings of the divine.

🗓️ Sawan Somwar Vrat 2025 Dates

One of the most significant parts of Shravan is the observance of fasts on Mondays, known as Somwar Vrats. In 2025, the key fasting dates are:

  • 1st Somwar: July 14, 2025
  • 2nd Somwar: July 21, 2025
  • 3rd Somwar: July 28, 2025
  • 4th Somwar: August 4, 2025

These Mondays are believed to be highly auspicious for pleasing Lord Shiva and seeking protection from negative energies.

🙏 The Mythological Significance of Sawan

Sawan holds immense mythological importance. According to Hindu texts, the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean) happened during this time. It brought out divine treasures but also a lethal poison—Halahala.

To save the world, Lord Shiva drank the poison. It turned his throat blue, earning him the name Neelkanth. Goddess Parvati prevented the poison from spreading by holding it in his throat. This act of sacrifice is remembered throughout Sawan.

🕉️ Rituals and Offerings During Sawan

Devotees wake up early, take a bath, and offer special prayers to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Many also worship Chandra Dev, Maa Lakshmi, and Lord Vishnu.

Common offerings during the puja include:

  • Bilva (Bel) leaves
  • Milk and Ganga Jal for Abhishek
  • Fruits, sweets, and incense sticks
  • Lit diyas (oil lamps) and flowers

Some families also perform Satyanarayan Katha and chant Om Namah Shivaya 108 times or more during the day.

🥗 Sawan 2025 Fasting Foods: What to Eat and Avoid

During the month of Shravan, a Satvik (pure vegetarian) diet is followed. This helps purify the body and mind while maintaining spiritual discipline.

✅ Allowed During Sawan Fast:

  • Fruits (banana, apple, papaya)
  • Dry fruits (almonds, raisins, dates)
  • Dairy (milk, paneer, curd)
  • Sabudana (tapioca pearls), Kuttu (buckwheat flour)
  • Samak rice, Rajgira (amaranth), Sendha Namak (rock salt)
  • Light spices like cumin, ginger, and black pepper

❌ Foods to Avoid:

  • Non-vegetarian food
  • Onion and garlic
  • Regular table salt
  • Wheat and regular rice (if fasting)
  • Processed or overly spiced food

Popular dishes include Sabudana Khichdi, Kuttu Puri, Rajgira Paratha, and Fruit Chaat.

🌼 Emotional and Spiritual Meaning of Shravan

Sawan is more than rituals—it’s a spiritual reset. Devotees reflect on their actions, express gratitude, and ask for inner strength. It’s a time to disconnect from material distractions and focus on inner growth.

The energy of Lord Shiva is believed to be at its peak during this month. Regular chanting and meditation are said to bring peace, healing, and blessings to households.

📿 Why Fasting on Mondays Matters

Mondays, or Somwars, are sacred to Lord Shiva. Fasting on these days is believed to help in overcoming difficulties and attracting divine grace. Couples also fast together to seek harmony and fertility blessings from Shiva and Parvati.

Even partial fasting—like eating only fruits—has spiritual value during this month.

📌 Key Takeaways for Devotees

  • Sawan 2025 will be observed from July 11 to July 25 in South and Western India.
  • Somwar Vrats fall on July 14, 21, 28 and August 4.
  • Avoid non-vegetarian food, onion, garlic, and processed grains while fasting.
  • Follow a Satvik diet with fruits, dairy, and light fasting recipes.
  • Offer prayers, perform abhishek, chant Shiva mantras, and stay spiritually focused.

🪔 Conclusion

Sawan 2025 is not just a religious observance—it’s a spiritual journey. Whether you’re fasting every Monday or just offering prayers, the energy of Lord Shiva brings purity, peace, and prosperity.

As the monsoon pours blessings from the skies, let your heart pour devotion at the feet of Neelkanth. Embrace the sacredness of Shravan and invite divine grace into your life.
