Scindia Charts Manipur’s Roadmap for Sustainable Growth

RR Team, October 30, 2025October 31, 2025
Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia chaired the third review meeting on Manipur’s Development Roadmap on October 30, 2025. The meeting, attended by Hon’ble Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, senior officials from the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER), and the Manipur State Government, aimed at evaluating ongoing projects and identifying new opportunities for inclusive, self-reliant growth.

The review underscored Manipur’s potential as a model for heritage-led development and its alignment with the national Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision, championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Reviving Polo and Promoting Heritage-Driven Tourism

One of the highlights of the meeting was the plan to revive Manipur Polo as both a symbol of cultural pride and an avenue for economic growth. Shri Scindia outlined a comprehensive roadmap to establish world-class polo training and coaching facilities, positioning Manipur as India’s Polo Capital once again.

The initiative integrates sports-linked tourism with rural enterprise, aiming to create local jobs, empower youth, and showcase Manipur’s unique cultural identity to the world.

Empowering Artisans and Weaving Communities

Scindia emphasized the importance of Manipur’s traditional handloom and handicraft sectors as engines of sustainable livelihood. He announced the establishment of 250 mini and 200 mega production units across the state to support Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and boost local employment.

These initiatives aim to strengthen weaving clusters, empower women artisans, and preserve the region’s unique craft heritage. The minister reiterated that Manipur could evolve into a national hub for creative industries, promoting both art and enterprise.

Infrastructure, Connectivity, and Agriculture

In the review, the Union Minister highlighted infrastructure expansion through the proposed Integrated Textile Park and an Institute of Technology and Design in Manipur. These initiatives are expected to foster skill development, innovation, and industrial growth.

He also emphasized the integration of Vibrant Villages into the PM Gati Shakti framework, ensuring last-mile connectivity and rural tourism integration. The roadmap envisions better logistics, digital infrastructure, and agricultural modernization to drive long-term prosperity.

Scindia reviewed progress in palm oil cultivation, setting a target of 10,000 hectares over the next four years. The initiative aims to create agri-based livelihoods, boost local processing industries, and reduce dependence on imports.

Accelerating Implementation and Private Investment

The minister directed officials to ensure time-bound implementation of development projects and measurable outcomes across sectors. He encouraged partnerships with private investors to unlock Manipur’s untapped potential in logistics, tourism, and agro-industries.

“The focus is not just on infrastructure creation but on generating outcomes that improve lives and build self-reliant communities,” Scindia said during the meeting.

Continuity and Commitment to the Northeast

The meeting followed up on two previous review sessions held earlier this year. The earlier discussions covered Polo Tourism Circuit development, Loktak Lake rejuvenation, palm oil cultivation, and Vibrant Villages projects, setting a strong foundation for sustainable development.

Through these continued engagements, Scindia reinforced a governance model rooted in purpose, partnership, and progress. He noted that Manipur’s cultural richness, entrepreneurial spirit, and community resilience make it a key contributor to the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
