SECI Extends Bid Deadline for Green Ammonia Tender

SECI Extends Deadline for Green Ammonia Bids

In a recent announcement, the Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI) extended the bid submission deadline to 30th June 2025 for its flagship green ammonia production and supply tender. This development comes under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched to fast-track India’s clean energy transition.

Earlier issued on 7th June 2024, the tender is a part of the SIGHT Scheme – Mode 2A, Tranche I, focused on ensuring the production and offtake of 7,24,000 metric tonnes of green ammonia annually.

Why This Tender Matters

India is aggressively pushing toward a hydrogen-based economy. Green ammonia, derived from green hydrogen and nitrogen, plays a vital role in decarbonizing the fertilizer industry, one of the biggest consumers of conventional ammonia.

Through this tender, SECI seeks to supply green ammonia to 13 identified fertilizer manufacturing units across the country. These units will gradually substitute fossil-fuel-based feedstock with cleaner alternatives.

Commercial Certainty for Green Investors

SECI will act as the aggregator of demand and sign long-term offtake contracts—valid for 10 years—with selected green ammonia producers. This initiative gives investors the commercial assurance needed to scale up green hydrogen and ammonia production infrastructure.

It also promotes market stability, enabling developers to recover capital investments over time while encouraging economies of scale in production.

Part of India’s Green Hydrogen Push

The tender falls under the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) programme. SIGHT is a central pillar of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, aimed at:

What’s in It for the Fertilizer Sector?

India’s fertilizer plants currently rely heavily on natural gas and naphtha to produce conventional ammonia. The move to green ammonia will:

This shift also supports India’s net-zero by 2070 goal.

Industry Response & Next Steps

The bid extension has been welcomed by industry stakeholders who requested more time for proposal formulation. Several green energy companies, including private sector players and public enterprises, are expected to bid for this high-value project.

Once finalized, the contracts will kick-start the construction of India’s first large-scale green ammonia production plants, paving the way for industrial decarbonization.

A Green Future, Backed by Policy

This SECI-led initiative demonstrates how strong policy support and institutional mechanisms can accelerate clean energy adoption. As India prepares for a low-carbon future, the fertilizer sector’s transition to green ammonia marks a defining milestone.
