Sheikh Hasina Sentenced to 6 Months by Bangladesh Court
Dhaka, July 2, 2025: Former Bangladesh Prime Minister and Awami League leader Sheikh Hasina has been sentenced to six months in prison by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) of Bangladesh in a contempt of court case. The ruling has sparked political tremors across the country and raised concerns internationally.
ICT Verdict Details
The judgment was delivered by a three-member bench led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder. According to reports from The Dhaka Tribune, the ICT found Hasina guilty of contempt of court based on her public statements challenging the tribunal’s integrity and processes.
Additionally, Shakil Akand Bulbul of Gobindaganj, Gaibandha, was sentenced to two months in prison in the same case.
India Voices Concern
India has expressed concern over what it called the “shrinking political space” in Bangladesh following the tribunal’s decision. The Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi noted the regional implications of prosecuting a high-profile democratic figure in the midst of rising political tensions in Dhaka.
“India values democratic processes in neighboring countries and urges all stakeholders to uphold transparency, judicial fairness, and political plurality,” said an MEA spokesperson.
Political Fallout in Bangladesh
Hasina, who served multiple terms as Prime Minister, remains a polarizing figure. Her removal from power last year was followed by protests, crackdowns, and party bans. This court verdict adds to the crisis. Her supporters claim the ruling is politically motivated, aimed at sidelining the Awami League permanently.
Opposition parties, however, welcomed the judgment. “No one is above the law, not even a former PM,” said a statement from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
Global Reaction and Legal Appeal
International human rights organizations, including Human Rights Watch, have questioned the timing and basis of the tribunal’s actions. The legal team for Sheikh Hasina announced plans to appeal the verdict to Bangladesh’s Supreme Court, citing violations of due process.
Political analysts believe the ruling may further destabilize the country ahead of the upcoming general elections.
Implications for South Asia
This sentencing also holds strategic implications for South Asian geopolitics. Hasina has been a key player in India-Bangladesh relations, especially in areas like counter-terrorism, trade, and border cooperation. Her legal troubles could lead to a realignment of political forces and foreign policy priorities in the region.
