Shivraj Singh Chouhan Highlights Bihar’s Makhana Growth

RR Team, October 5, 2025October 4, 2025
Union Minister for Agriculture, Farmers’ Welfare, and Rural Development, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, visited Patna today to attend Makhana Mahotsav 2025 at Gyan Bhavan, Gandhi Maidan. During the one-day tour, he also released the report “Makhana: From Culture to Prosperity” (Makhana: Sanskriti se Samridhhi), highlighting the growth of Bihar’s makhana industry.
Describing makhana (fox nut) as an “extraordinary blessing” for the poor, Shri Chouhan emphasized that Bihar has transformed into a global hub for makhana production. He noted that cultivation areas have expanded from around 3,000 hectares to 35,000–40,000 hectares, underscoring the crop’s growing economic significance.

Addressing attendees, the Minister highlighted Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s recent initiatives, including a historic ₹64,000 crore support package aimed at Bihar’s youth. “Bihar is witnessing showers of prosperity and development — the Sun of a developed India is shining brightly on the state’s destiny,” he remarked.

Shri Chouhan also referenced the recent hike in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) announced by the Central Government, assuring farmers that the Centre will procure all lentils (masoor), urad, and arhar grown in Bihar at MSP rates, further strengthening farmers’ incomes and agricultural sustainability.

The Union Minister announced the establishment of a Makhana Board to oversee research, development, marketing, branding, and promotion of the crop. He added that nearly ₹475 crore has been sanctioned for modern machinery, development of new varieties, and enhanced processing facilities to boost production and value addition.

Shri Chouhan encouraged Bihar’s youth to launch startups in the makhana sector, ensuring the government’s full support. “Our goal is to take makhana from India to dining tables across the world, ensuring a steady rise in farmers’ incomes,” he said, highlighting the crop’s export potential.

The Minister’s remarks signal the Centre’s commitment to sustainable agricultural growth, innovation, and rural development, while positioning Bihar as a key player in India’s agribusiness landscape.

Experts note that Bihar’s makhana industry not only uplifts farmers economically but also strengthens rural livelihoods, promotes agro-based entrepreneurship, and enhances global recognition of India’s traditional crops.

With government support, infrastructure investment, and entrepreneurial initiatives, makhana cultivation is set to become a cornerstone of Bihar’s agricultural prosperity, fostering both local development and international trade opportunities.
