A Tribute to Art and Values
In a grand ceremony, Dr Sonal Mansingh was awarded the Srimanta Sankardeva Award 2025 by the Government of Assam. The event took place at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra, Guwahati, on June 12. The award honours individuals who reflect the values of the 15th-century saint Srimanta Sankardeva.
The award was presented by Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya. Dignitaries such as CM Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and Cultural Minister Bimal Bora were present. Padma Bhushan recipient Jatin Goswami also attended the event.
Honouring a Living Legend
Dr Sonal Mansingh is one of India’s most respected classical dancers. She holds the Padma Vibhushan and served as a former Rajya Sabha member. Trained in Bharatanatyam and Odissi, she also studied Manipuri dance early in her life. This built her deep connection with Northeast India.
She considers Kamakhya Temple in Assam one of her spiritual homes. Her performances often go beyond dance. They send powerful messages about women’s rights, social justice, and environmental care.
A Voice for Culture and Social Change
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal praised her legacy. “She is not only a guardian of tradition but a force for change,” he said. “Her art addresses key social issues while preserving classical roots.”
He also spoke about Srimanta Sankardeva’s teachings. The saint promoted unity, harmony, and ecological awareness. “His words—a tree is like ten sons—remind us to protect nature as we would family,” Sonowal added.
He said Sankardeva shaped Assamese culture. “Gurujona created a society where all castes, creeds, and languages coexisted,” he said. “He uplifted the poor and built ethical foundations that still guide us.”

The Srimanta Sankardeva Award celebrates those who embody these values in today’s world. Dr Mansingh, through her discipline, compassion, and creativity, reflects those ideals.
“This award goes to someone whose art brings people together,” said Sonowal. “She has used dance as a powerful tool to teach, inspire, and unite.”

The award is named after Srimanta Sankardeva, a saint who led a cultural revolution in Assam. He inspired the Bhakti movement in the region. His work spanned poetry, music, drama, and community building.
