Speaker Om Birla Leads Indian Delegation at 68th CPC

Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla, heading an Indian Parliamentary Delegation, has arrived in Bridgetown, Barbados, to participate in the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC), held from October 5 to 12, 2025. The conference brings together over 600 delegates from more than 180 legislatures worldwide to discuss strengthening democratic institutions, promoting good governance, and enhancing global parliamentary cooperation.

Indian Delegation and Participation

The Indian delegation includes Shri Harivansh, Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha; Shri Anurag Sharma, MP; Dr. D. Purandeswari, MP; Dr. K. Sudhakar, MP; Smt. Rekha Sharma, MP; Dr. Ajeet Madhavrao Gopchade, MP; Shri Utpal Kumar Singh, Secretary General, Lok Sabha; and Shri P.C. Mody, Secretary General, Rajya Sabha. The delegation actively participated in the opening ceremony of the CPC.

Workshop on Leveraging Technology

On October 8, Shri Om Birla will chair a key workshop titled “Leveraging Technology: Enhancing Democracy through Digital Transformations and Tackling the Digital Divide.” The session will focus on using technology to improve parliamentary transparency, facilitate citizen engagement, and reduce disparities in digital access.

Addressing the General Assembly

Speaker Om Birla will also address the General Assembly of the 68th CPC on the theme “The Commonwealth: A Global Partner.” He is expected to highlight India’s commitment to democratic values, inclusive governance, and global parliamentary cooperation, reinforcing India’s proactive role in Commonwealth affairs.

Thematic Workshops and Bilateral Engagements

Throughout the week-long conference, seven thematic workshops will be held on contemporary parliamentary issues. Members of the Indian delegation, including 36 presiding officers from 24 State and UT legislatures, will actively participate. Shri Birla is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with counterparts from other Commonwealth nations to strengthen legislative cooperation and exchange best practices.

India’s Role in the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association

India has consistently contributed to the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association’s initiatives, promoting parliamentary diplomacy and capacity building. Participation in the 68th CPC reflects India’s continued commitment to fostering dialogue, innovation, and collaboration within the Commonwealth parliamentary community.
