Sunetra Pawar’s Mumbai Arrival Signals Historic Deputy CM Role

Rajya Sabha member Sunetra Pawar arrived in Mumbai early Saturday morning, setting the stage for her swearing-in as Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister. Her appointment is set to mark a historic milestone, as she becomes the first woman to hold the post in the State. The development follows the death of her husband, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief and senior leader Ajit Pawar, triggering a major political transition in Maharashtra.
Ms. Pawar reached Mumbai in the early hours of January 31, accompanied by her son, Parth Pawar. She proceeded directly to ‘Devgiri’, the official residence of the late Ajit Pawar in south Mumbai. The solemn arrival underscored the gravity of the moment, as personal loss and political responsibility converged in a single transition.

NCP Legislature Meeting to Formalise Leadership

The NCP’s legislature wing is scheduled to meet in Mumbai on Saturday afternoon, where Sunetra Pawar is expected to be formally elected as its leader. Senior NCP leader and Maharashtra minister Chhagan Bhujbal confirmed that the meeting would clear the way for her elevation to the Deputy Chief Minister’s post.

Party leaders indicated that the decision enjoys broad internal consensus, aimed at ensuring continuity and stability within the ruling alliance. The move is also seen as an effort to prevent uncertainty at a time when Maharashtra’s political equations remain fluid.

Historic First for Maharashtra

Once sworn in, Sunetra Pawar will become the first woman Deputy Chief Minister in Maharashtra’s political history. The development has drawn attention across party lines, with leaders acknowledging the symbolic and practical significance of her appointment in a traditionally male-dominated political landscape.

Ms. Pawar, who represents the NCP in the Rajya Sabha, has largely remained away from frontline electoral politics in the past. However, her elevation now places her at the centre of governance in one of India’s most politically influential states.

Mixed Reactions Within the Pawar Family and NCP

NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) chief Sharad Pawar stated that he was not aware of the swearing-in plans at the time of media interaction. His remarks highlighted the ongoing uncertainty and realignment within the broader Pawar political family and the divided NCP.

At the same time, senior NCP leader Praful Patel publicly stated that there was no opposition within the party to Sunetra Pawar becoming the legislature party leader. This endorsement has helped consolidate her position amid internal and external scrutiny.

Challenges Ahead in a Turbulent Political Climate

Sunetra Pawar is expected to assume office at a time of considerable political churn. The NCP and its allies are navigating leadership transitions, factional divisions, and evolving power equations within the State government.

Political observers note that her immediate challenge will be to balance governance responsibilities with party management, while also commanding authority in a coalition environment shaped by recent upheavals.

National Attention on Maharashtra

The transition has drawn national attention, with Maharashtra once again emerging as a focal point of political developments. Analysts see Sunetra Pawar’s appointment as both a moment of continuity and a test of adaptability for the ruling establishment.
