Tamil Nadu on High Alert as Northeast Monsoon Intensifies

RR Team, October 21, 2025
Chennai, Oct 21: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several coastal districts in Tamil Nadu as the Northeast Monsoon continues to strengthen. Regions including Mannarkoil, Ayan, Thiruvaalieswaram, Kakanallur, Vaigaikulam, and Bramadesam are expected to experience intense rainfall over the next 48 hours.

IMD Warns of Heavy Rainfall and Strong Winds

According to the IMD’s latest bulletin, the monsoon system is gaining momentum over the Bay of Bengal, resulting in widespread rainfall across southern Tamil Nadu. Districts such as Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram, and Kanniyakumari are expected to witness heavy to very heavy rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.

The IMD has urged local administrations to remain vigilant, warning of potential flooding in low-lying areas and possible disruption to road and rail traffic. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea due to rough conditions in the Gulf of Mannar and adjoining coastal waters.

Southern Tamil Nadu Sees Heavy Inflows into Dams

Several reservoirs in southern Tamil Nadu, including the Papanasam, Manimuthar, and Vaigai dams, have received substantial inflows following days of continuous rainfall. Authorities are closely monitoring water levels to manage potential overflow and ensure the safety of nearby communities.

Officials from the Tamil Nadu Disaster Management Authority (TNDMA) said that teams have been deployed to coastal and flood-prone areas. Relief centers are being set up in vulnerable districts, and emergency response teams remain on standby.

Chennai Witnesses Waterlogging, Traffic Congestion

In Chennai, several areas including T. Nagar, Velachery, and Perambur reported severe waterlogging after overnight rains. The Greater Chennai Corporation has deployed additional pumps and personnel to drain stagnant water, while traffic police have been tasked with regulating vehicular movement in affected zones.

Public transport has been partially affected, with delays reported in bus and suburban train services. The state transport department has advised commuters to avoid non-essential travel in the coming days.

Government Issues Safety Guidelines

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has reviewed the preparedness of all departments through a high-level meeting. He directed district collectors to ensure timely evacuation of residents from flood-prone areas and provide adequate food, shelter, and medical support in relief camps.

The government has also urged citizens to stay indoors during heavy rainfall, avoid waterlogged roads, and keep emergency helpline numbers handy. Essential services, including power and water supply, are being closely monitored to prevent outages.

Monsoon Strengthens Across South India

The Northeast Monsoon, which typically sets in over Tamil Nadu and Kerala in mid-October, is now in full swing. According to the IMD, Kerala too is witnessing widespread rainfall, with orange alerts issued in Kottayam and Idukki districts.

Weather experts believe the intensified system is being influenced by a low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal, which may move towards the Tamil Nadu coast in the coming days, further enhancing rainfall activity across the region.

Public Urged to Stay Cautious

Authorities have requested residents to avoid venturing near rivers, reservoirs, and low-lying areas. The IMD will continue to monitor developments closely and issue timely updates. With the monsoon gaining strength, people are advised to follow official advisories and stay safe indoors.

As Tamil Nadu braces for another spell of intense rain, preparedness and caution remain key in minimizing disruption and ensuring public safety.
