Textiles Ministry Drives Research with TRAs Meet

The Ministry of Textiles convened its inaugural Coordination Committee Meeting of Textile Research Associations (TRAs) at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, under the guidance of Union Minister Shri Giriraj Singh and chaired by Secretary (Textiles) Smt. Neelam Shami Rao. The meeting marks a significant initiative to enhance coordination, outcome orientation, and effectiveness in textile research and development across India.

Strategic Focus on Research and Innovation

Senior officials from the Ministry, TRAs, Export Promotion Councils (EPCs), and academic institutions including IIT Delhi participated in a full-day, rigorous brainstorming session. Discussions emphasized a “Research for Industry” approach, focusing on Centres of Excellence (CoEs) to advance fibre science, technical textiles, sustainability, and innovation-led growth. Key priorities included upgrading laboratory infrastructure to global standards and promoting industry-driven, application-oriented research.

Sustainability and Circular Solutions

The Committee highlighted sustainability and recycling as central research objectives. Plans were discussed to formulate a coordinated national textile research framework, promoting eco-efficient material blends, circular textile solutions, and sustainable manufacturing processes. Enhanced collaboration with other Government R&D initiatives, including CSIR schemes, and academic institutions was stressed to facilitate knowledge dissemination and practical applications.

Emerging Areas in Textile Research

Participants explored the growing importance of smart textiles and advanced applications, including electronic fibres, predictive modelling, and e-textile systems for healthcare, defence, and intelligent environments. The discussions aimed to identify research opportunities that can provide competitive advantage to the Indian textile sector globally.

Flagship Government Initiatives

Flagship initiatives such as the National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM), PM MITRA Parks, and various export promotion schemes were highlighted as key enablers for driving innovation and positioning India as a global textile leader. The meeting concluded with a commitment to strengthen coordination among TRAs and leverage research and collaboration to drive long-term sector growth.
