THSTI Unveils Medical Research Centre on 16th Foundation Day

RR Team, July 15, 2025July 16, 2025

Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, marked the 16th Foundation Day of the Translational Health Science & Technology Institute (THSTI) by inspecting the upcoming Medical Research Centre (MRC). Located in Faridabad, the centre is nearly ready for launch and represents a major milestone in India’s medical and clinical research capabilities.

A New Era for Clinical Research in India

THSTI’s Medical Research Centre is a multi-storeyed facility designed to support advanced clinical studies. It includes specialized zones for research on enteric and respiratory infections. The centre is equipped to host clinical observation studies, diagnostics, and therapeutic research.

One standout feature is the Controlled Human Infection Facility. It is among the very few of its kind in Asia and is expected to fast-track research on infectious diseases.

Dr. Jitendra Singh Reviews Progress on Site

During his visit, the Minister inspected the building structure, reviewed the status of equipment installation, and ensured that operational readiness was on track. He appreciated the progress made and praised the THSTI team for its dedication to translational health research.

He noted that the centre would help India develop its own solutions for emerging public health threats through scientific innovation and global partnerships.

COVID-19 Contributions and Research Excellence

Dr. Jitendra Singh recalled THSTI’s pivotal role during the COVID-19 pandemic. The institute played a key part in early DNA vaccine trials and carried out extensive studies on immunology and viral transmission.

Its findings directly contributed to India’s national response and were done in collaboration with industry leaders and academic institutions. The Minister emphasized that this model of rapid scientific response demonstrated THSTI’s relevance as a health innovation hub.

Major Milestones Over the Past Year

Dr. Singh also highlighted some of THSTI’s recent achievements:

  • Monoclonal antibodies against Nipah virus: Developed in-house, marking a major step for a low- and middle-income country.
  • CEPI recognition: THSTI was selected as a Pre-clinical Network Laboratory — the first in Asia and ninth globally.
  • Expanded Experimental Animal Facility: Now one of the largest in India, enabling safe research on high-risk pathogens.
  • Ge-HuMiC Collection: A genetically defined microbial resource to support microbiome and infectious disease research.

New Facilities to Drive Innovation

Alongside the Medical Research Centre, the upcoming Translational Research Facility (TRF) will also play a crucial role. It will support research and development in:

  • Vaccines
  • Monoclonal antibodies
  • Diagnostics
  • Biotherapeutics

The TRF is expected to host multiple Centres of Excellence in partnership with industry and academia. These facilities will position India as a global player in medical research and innovation.

Collaboration at the Heart of Innovation

Dr. Singh underscored the value of public-private partnerships. Referring to the SYNCH-N 2025 event held a day prior, he noted that 18 Letters of Intent and MoUs were signed. These tie-ups will accelerate the translation of research into real-world, accessible healthcare solutions.

The Minister applauded THSTI for fostering collaboration and creating a model of integrated innovation in public health.

THSTI’s Growing Global Impact

With recognition from international organizations and growing support from India’s Ministry of Science and Technology, THSTI is now a key player in the global health R&D ecosystem.

As the Medical Research Centre nears its official launch, the institute is poised to make landmark contributions to infectious disease management, epidemic preparedness, and human health.

India’s Future in Health Research Looks Strong

As Dr. Jitendra Singh said in his closing remarks, “Your work is directly contributing to a healthier, more resilient India.”

With the completion of the Medical Research Centre, THSTI continues to serve as a beacon of hope and progress — where cutting-edge science meets the nation’s health needs.
