Lhasa, May 12, 2025 — An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale jolted Tibet early Monday morning, triggering panic among residents and prompting emergency responses across the region. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the quake struck at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, increasing the likelihood of aftershocks.
The tremors were felt across several districts, sending people rushing out of their homes, offices, and schools. Emergency drills were activated in educational institutions, and local authorities began inspections for potential structural damage.
“Although there are no immediate reports of casualties or major damage, the situation is being closely monitored,” said an official from the Tibet Autonomous Region’s Disaster Management Authority. “Rescue and response teams have been deployed to assess the impact and provide assistance wherever necessary.”
Experts say that earthquakes with shallow epicenters can be particularly dangerous as their energy is concentrated near the surface, causing stronger ground shaking. Residents have been advised to stay alert for potential aftershocks over the next 24 to 48 hours.
Temporary disruption in mobile networks and power supply was reported in some areas but was quickly restored. Emergency shelters have been set up in affected zones, and medical teams are on standby.
Seismologists continue to analyze the seismic activity to determine whether it is an isolated event or part of a larger tectonic shift. In the meantime, officials urge residents to remain calm and follow safety protocols issued by local authorities.
As of now, no fatalities or serious injuries have been confirmed, and the response teams remain on high alert to address any emerging needs.
