Tirupati Laddu Controversy: Giriraj Singh Demands CBI Investigation, Calls for Severe Punishment

Union Minister Giriraj Singh has called for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into allegations regarding the use of adulterated ghee in preparing the sacred Tirupati laddus. Addressing the issue, Singh demanded that those responsible for reportedly mixing “beef tallow, lard, and fish oil” in the ghee should face the death penalty, not just legal punishment.

While speaking in Mysuru, Karnataka, Singh criticized the previous Andhra Pradesh government led by YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. He raised concerns about the procurement of adulterated ghee and alleged financial irregularities involving ₹20,000 crores. Singh urged the CBI to investigate the prices at which the ghee was purchased and why it was allegedly tainted. He also emphasized the deep cultural and religious significance of the matter, stating that it was an offense against the Hindu community.

The controversy intensified after the current Andhra Pradesh government under Chandrababu Naidu cited a laboratory report from Gujarat. According to the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), the report confirmed the use of animal fat in the ghee used for preparing the Tirupati laddus, which are offered as ‘prasadam’ at the Lord Venkateshwara temple. The alleged adulteration is said to have occurred during the tenure of the previous YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government.

Former Chief Minister and YSRCP leader Jagan Mohan Reddy denied the allegations, calling them baseless and politically motivated. He accused Naidu of exploiting religious sentiments for political gain. The YSRCP has since filed a petition in the Andhra Pradesh High Court, requesting an independent investigation into the matter.

As the controversy continues, Union Health Minister JP Nadda has assured that the Centre will thoroughly review the situation after receiving a detailed report from the Andhra Pradesh government.
