Tirupati Laddu Row Rekindles Faith–Politics Clash in Andhra Pradesh

RR Team, February 9, 2026February 9, 2026
The long-simmering controversy surrounding the Tirupati laddu, the sacred prasadam of the Tirumala Venkateswara Temple, has once again erupted into a major political flashpoint in Andhra Pradesh. The submission of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) report into alleged adulteration of ghee used in the laddu has triggered sharp exchanges between the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the opposition YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), intertwining faith, governance, and politics.

The Andhra Pradesh government’s decision to appoint a single-member commission to examine the SIT findings has further intensified the debate, with both sides claiming vindication and accusing the other of politicising a matter deeply connected to religious sentiment.

SIT Findings Rekindle Political Confrontation

The SIT, constituted following directions from the Supreme Court, examined allegations of adulteration in the ghee supplied to the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD). According to the report, irregularities were found at multiple stages of procurement, from tendering processes to supply oversight.

Investigators noted that ghee supplied for laddu preparation contained non-dairy substances, including vegetable oils, chemical esters, and synthetic additives. These findings contradicted assurances given earlier by authorities and reignited concerns over the sanctity of the prasadam distributed to millions of devotees annually.

Tender Changes Under Scrutiny

A key focus of the SIT report is the alteration of tender conditions introduced in 2020. The investigation found that eligibility norms were diluted without sufficient technical or administrative justification. These changes reduced the minimum turnover requirement and shortened mandatory dairy-sector experience, allowing previously ineligible suppliers to participate.

The report also flagged the role of “special invitees” in procurement meetings, raising questions about transparency and institutional accountability within the TTD’s administrative framework.

TDP Claims Vindication

The ruling TDP has described the SIT findings as confirmation of its long-standing allegations. Party leaders argue that the report establishes systemic lapses during the previous YSRCP regime, enabling the supply of substandard ghee.

TDP spokespersons have welcomed the proposed commission, stating it will help pinpoint individual responsibility and ensure corrective action. The party maintains that the issue goes beyond politics and concerns the protection of public faith.

YSRCP Rejects Allegations

The YSR Congress Party has strongly rejected claims that the SIT report indicts its tenure. Party leaders argue that the investigation debunked allegations of animal fat in the ghee and that procurement irregularities predate their administration.

YSRCP has also questioned the legal basis for appointing a new commission after Supreme Court intervention, alleging that the move is politically motivated. The opposition insists that selective interpretation of the report is being used to divert attention from governance challenges.

Faith, Governance, and Public Trust

The Tirupati laddu holds immense religious significance, with its origins tracing back centuries. Any suggestion of compromise in its purity resonates deeply with devotees across India and abroad, making the controversy particularly sensitive.

Experts note that beyond political accountability, the episode highlights the need for stronger institutional safeguards, transparent procurement systems, and independent audits for religious institutions handling large-scale operations.

What Lies Ahead

With the single-member commission yet to be formally constituted and its terms of reference awaited, the controversy shows no signs of abating. Political reactions are likely to intensify as the commission begins its work and as judicial scrutiny continues.

How the Andhra Pradesh government balances accountability with respect for religious sentiment will be closely watched, not just by political stakeholders but also by millions of devotees who view the Tirupati laddu as a symbol of faith and trust.
