In a major boost to fisheries development in the Northeast, Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, who heads the Ministries of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying as well as Panchayati Raj, is set to lay the foundation stone for a state-of-the-art Integrated Aquapark in Kailashahar, Tripura. This significant initiative, with an investment of ₹42.4 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), marks a pivotal step towards strengthening the fisheries infrastructure and uplifting the livelihoods of fishers in the region. The announcement will coincide with the inauguration of a one-day Fish Festival from Agartala on May 18, 2025, celebrating the community’s contributions to the fisheries sector.
Accompanying the Union Minister at the event will be Shri George Kurian, Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Minority Affairs, and Shri Sudhangshu Das, Tripura’s Minister of Fisheries. The occasion will also honor beneficiaries and stakeholders who have made notable contributions to the sector. Sanction orders, including those for Kisan Credit Cards, will be distributed to fishers and fish farmers, reaffirming the government’s commitment to financial inclusion and welfare.
The Integrated Aquapark in Kailashahar is envisioned as a one-stop hub that integrates all necessary facilities for the fisheries value chain—hatcheries, feed mills, cold storage, processing, training, and marketing—under a single roof. More than just an infrastructure project, it is a visionary initiative that aims to transform local fisheries into a sustainable and scalable industry. Emphasis will be laid on youth and women empowerment, with the park operating on a hub-and-spoke model tailored to regional needs.
Tripura, known for its high per capita fish consumption, has shown tremendous progress in recent years. The state has received over ₹319 crore in project funding under PMMSY and the Blue Revolution over the past decade, fostering growth in aquaculture, technology, and infrastructure. With the new Aquapark, the state is poised to become a leader in modern fisheries development, providing livelihood opportunities and fostering innovation throughout the aquaculture ecosystem.
