Trump Warns BRICS Allies With 10% Tariff Threat

Washington, July 7, 2025 — U.S. President Donald Trump has warned countries siding with BRICS policies. He announced a fresh 10% tariff on all trade with such nations.

Why the Warning?

This strong message came after India signed the BRICS declaration. The joint statement criticized the U.S. for using tariffs and sanctions that violate WTO rules.

On Truth Social, Trump posted: “Any country aligning with anti-American policies of BRICS will face a 10% tariff. No exceptions.”

He added that official tariff letters would be sent starting 12:00 PM (ET), Monday.

India’s Role in BRICS

India supported the BRICS Rio Declaration. It warned against unilateral economic measures and called them harmful and illegal.

The declaration did not name the U.S. directly. But the wording clearly pointed to America’s recent actions.

BRICS also voiced concern about the growing use of unfair trade practices worldwide.

U.S. Dollar Threat Sparks More Tension

This is not Trump’s first warning. Earlier this year, he threatened 100% tariffs if BRICS replaced the U.S. dollar.

“If BRICS does that, we will tax their trade at 100%,” he had said.

Many BRICS members have called for a new financial system. They want to reduce their reliance on the U.S. dollar.

India’s Balancing Act

India is now in a tricky position. While it supports BRICS, it is also in talks with the U.S. for a mini trade deal.

These talks began in February 2025. The goal is to finalize the first phase by autumn.

India has made it clear that agriculture and dairy are off the table. These are sensitive areas where it won’t compromise.

Global Reactions to Trump’s Statement

Trump’s post has sparked concern among global investors and businesses. Experts fear higher tariffs may slow down global trade.

Some BRICS nations were hesitant to name the U.S. in the declaration. But the impact of their message was clear.

Trump, using his “America First” strategy, is trying to protect U.S. businesses from what he calls unfair treatment.

What This Means for India

India must walk a fine line. It wants to remain close to BRICS but can’t risk damaging its trade with the U.S.

BRICS supports India’s push for UN reforms and its stance on global terrorism. These are diplomatic wins for India.

Still, if Trump wins the 2024 U.S. elections again, he may tighten pressure on India further.

The Road Ahead

Trade is no longer just about business. It’s now a powerful political tool.

Countries are forming new blocs, setting new rules, and challenging old powers.

For India, the next few months will be crucial. It must protect its interests on both sides while staying neutral.

As BRICS grows stronger, and Trump’s trade warnings continue, global businesses must prepare for more uncertainty ahead.
