Union Health Minister’s Keynote on World Food Safety Day

RR Team, June 8, 2025June 8, 2025

On World Food Safety Day 2025, Union Health Minister Shri J.P. Nadda addressed the gathering at NIMHANS, Bengaluru. The event, organized by FSSAI, carried the theme “Stop Obesity by Eating Safe and Healthy.” Shri Nadda launched a new campaign under the Eat Right India program. This campaign uses multiple languages, sign language, and media platforms to reach all citizens. The goal is to build a mass movement for better nutrition and public health.

Focus on Obesity Prevention

Shri Nadda emphasized the rising challenge of obesity in India. He cited the ICMR–INDIAB study, showing urban obesity rose by nearly 40% between 2008 and 2020. Rural obesity also increased by 23%. Another study warns that by 2050, one-third of India’s population may be obese.

The Minister stressed that healthy food habits are key to stopping obesity. He called for all stakeholders to spread awareness about healthy eating. Shri Nadda also urged people to revive traditional food habits like eating millets.

Prime Minister’s Call to Reduce Oil Consumption

Shri Nadda reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to reduce oil consumption by 10%. He also urged reducing salt intake. These changes, combined with better food choices, can help fight obesity and improve public health.

The Minister highlighted FSSAI’s innovative Sugar and Oil Boards campaign. These boards are displayed in schools, workplaces, and public places. They educate people on hidden sugars and fats in everyday food. Shri Nadda suggested including calorie information too.

Healthy Food and Immunity

The Health Minister said safe and nutritious food boosts immunity and well-being. He called eating right a “right” everyone should practice. He stressed that this responsibility lies with the government, industry, schools, and individuals alike.

Special Launches and Programs

During the event, Shri Nadda launched the Eat Right Activity Book for schools. This book teaches children about food safety, nutrition, and hygiene through fun activities. It supports learning at all school levels and encourages children to promote healthy eating.

Government Officials and Experts Speak

Union Health Secretary Ms. Punya Salila Srivastava highlighted the need for early awareness and cross-sector cooperation. She underlined the importance of avoiding harmful additives in food. She said reducing oil consumption is a “clarion call” for health.

Shri Sanjay Kumar, Secretary of School Education, stressed educating children about healthy food choices. He mentioned efforts to include millets in school meals and promote physical education.

Inclusive and Multi-Platform Outreach

The new Stop Obesity campaign under Eat Right India will reach people through FM radio, railway announcements, and digital media. Communication materials will be in multiple regional languages and sign language. Renowned chef Ranveer Brar supports this campaign and encourages reducing oil use.

Call to Action

Shri Nadda urged everyone to choose traditional foods and maintain healthy lifestyles. He said food safety and healthy eating should become a movement. The combined efforts of all stakeholders can build a healthier India, vital for a developed nation.

Conclusion

World Food Safety Day 2025 highlighted India’s urgent need to tackle obesity through safe and healthy eating. The government’s multi-pronged campaign aims to educate, involve, and empower citizens. Together, these efforts will help create a healthier future for all Indians.
