Union Minister of Coal and Mines to Inaugurate Rooftop Solar Power Plant at GSI Training Institute, Hyderabad

RR Team, October 11, 2024October 11, 2024

Shri G. Kishan Reddy, Union Minister of Coal and Mines, is set to inaugurate a Rooftop Solar Power System at the Geological Survey of India (GSI) Training Institute in Bandlaguda-Nagole, Hyderabad, tomorrow. The event will include a ceremonial lamp lighting, followed by the official Switch-on ceremony where the solar plant will be activated. The Minister, along with other dignitaries, will also plant saplings at the GSITI campus, underscoring the institute’s commitment to environmental sustainability. A site visit to the Solar Power Plant is also plannedThe Minister, along with other dignitaries, will also plant saplings at the GSITI campus, underscoring the institute’s commitment to environmental sustainability. A site visit to the Solar Power Plant is also planned.

Several notable dignitaries will be in attendance, including Malkajgiri Member of Parliament Shri Eatala Rajender; Shri Musharraf Ali Faruqui, Chairman and Managing Director of Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL); Shri S.D. Patbhaje, Additional Director General of the Geological Survey of India (Southern Region); and other senior GSI officers.

The installation of this rooftop solar power plant is part of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, launched by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on 15th February 2024. This initiative aims to position India as a global leader in renewable energy by promoting clean and affordable power nationwide. Under this Yojana, solar panels are being installed on government buildings and private homes across the country. The ultimate goal is to ensure that all government offices in India are fully powered by solar energy, demonstrating the country’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and combating climate change.

This ambitious plan of 100% Solarization reflects the government’s intention to lead by example, transitioning public administration towards energy efficiency. It sets a benchmark for sustainability by utilizing abundant solar resources and reducing reliance on non-renewable energy.

In addition to addressing environmental challenges, this project creates economic opportunities in the renewable energy sector, from manufacturing to installation and maintenance. Furthermore, by reducing the operational costs at GSITI, more resources can be allocated for research, training, and development, benefiting students, faculty, and the broader scientific community. This solar installation stands as a model for other institutions across the nation, symbolizing a future where clean energy and responsible growth are prioritized.

A total of 300 bifacial solar panels have been installed at the GSI Training Institute. The panels measure 7.5 feet in height and 3.75 feet in width. Each panel has a rated power of 550 watts peak (WP) under standard test conditions, with a daily power generation capacity of 500 to 700 units. This project demonstrates the potential for significant energy savings and a reduced carbon footprint.
