Unnao Case: Protesters, Congress Leader Detained

RR Team, December 27, 2025December 28, 2025
Delhi Police detained activist Yogita Bhayana, Congress leader Mumtaz Patel, and several others on Saturday (December 27, 2025) while they staged a sit-in near the Parliament complex. The protesters were demanding the cancellation of bail granted to Kuldeep Singh Sengar, convicted in the 2017 Unnao rape case.

Protest Near Parliament

The demonstration began around 4 p.m., with participants raising slogans and sitting on the road near Parliament. Police personnel informed the protesters through loudspeakers that the area was not designated for protests and asked them to vacate. Upon their refusal, the authorities removed and detained the activists, ensuring the area was cleared.

Background of Bail Controversy

The Delhi High Court on December 23, 2025, granted bail to Sengar, an expelled BJP MLA, pending disposal of his appeal against his life conviction in the 2017 rape case. The court imposed strict conditions, including barring him from entering within a five-kilometre radius of the victim’s residence. Sengar remains in jail for a separate 10-year sentence related to the custodial death of the survivor’s father.

Continued Protests and Legal Action

The detention followed protests outside the Delhi High Court by the survivor’s mother, Yogita Bhayana, and activists from the All India Democratic Women’s Association. The survivor’s mother expressed her intention to approach the Supreme Court against the High Court’s order, affirming her faith in the apex court to uphold justice. The CBI has already moved the Supreme Court challenging Sengar’s bail.

Authorities Ensure Law and Order

Delhi Police maintained that the protesters were detained to enforce rules regarding public demonstrations near Parliament and to prevent disruption. The action reflects the authorities’ effort to balance the right to protest with security and public order in central government areas.
