🤝 India-Russia Naval Partnership
INS Tamal is the eighth Krivak-class frigate and the second in the upgraded Tushil class. India is also building two more ships of this class at Goa Shipyard Limited, showcasing Indo-Russian collaboration and India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat push in defence.
⚓ Advanced Capabilities
Measuring 125 meters and weighing 3,900 tonnes, Tamal integrates cutting-edge technologies:
- BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles
- Vertically launched SAMs
- Heavyweight torpedoes and CIWS
- 100 MM main gun and EO/IR targeting system
- Advanced sonar (HUMSA NG Mk II)
- Multi-role and AEW helicopters support
The ship can cruise at over 30 knots and supports full network-centric warfare and electronic warfare capabilities.
🛠️ Indigenous Push
Although built in Russia, Tamal features 26% indigenous content and more than 33 Indian systems from companies like:
- BrahMos Aerospace
- Bharat Electronics Limited
- Keltron, Nova Integrated Systems (TATA)
- Johnson Controls India and Elcome Marine
🐻 A Symbolic Warrior
Named after the mythical sword of Lord Indra, Tamal reflects Indian strength and mythology. Its mascot, The Great Bear, blends India’s Jambavant with Russia’s Eurasian brown bear, symbolizing unity and resilience.
The ship’s motto, “Sarvada Sarvatra Vijaya” (Victorious Always Everytime), echoes the Indian Navy’s vision: Combat Ready, Credible, Cohesive, and Future Ready.
🧭 Western Fleet Awaits
Upon commissioning, Tamal will join the Western Fleet, boosting operational strength on the western seaboard. It’s the final foreign-origin warship for India, as the country moves towards full-scale indigenous naval production.
