Uttarakhand Approves Ropeways to Kedarnath and Hemkund Sahib, Cutting Travel Time Drastically

In a landmark decision aimed at transforming the pilgrimage experience in Uttarakhand, the government has approved two ambitious ropeway projects that promise to drastically reduce travel time to Kedarnath and Hemkund Sahib. These sacred sites, which attract millions of devotees annually, are currently accessible only through challenging treks that take several hours to complete. The new ropeways will provide a safer, faster, and more convenient mode of transport, making the journey significantly easier for pilgrims of all ages.

The Kedarnath ropeway, stretching 12.9 kilometers from Sonprayag to the revered temple, will cut the grueling 8-9 hour trek down to just 36 minutes. With an estimated cost of ₹4,081 crore, the project will be developed under a public-private partnership using state-of-the-art Tri-Cable Detachable Gondola (3S) technology. This advanced system, designed to withstand harsh weather conditions, will have the capacity to transport up to 18,000 pilgrims daily.

Similarly, the Hemkund Sahib ropeway will span 12.4 kilometers from Govindghat, offering much-needed relief to devotees undertaking the demanding 21-km uphill trek. Built at a cost of ₹2,730 crore, the project is expected to boost accessibility to the revered Sikh shrine, potentially increasing annual footfall tenfold from the current 1.77 lakh visitors.

The decision, approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reflects the government’s commitment to improving pilgrimage infrastructure while maintaining an eco-friendly approach. The new ropeways will not only reduce travel time but also ensure safer and more comfortable journeys, particularly for elderly devotees and those with mobility challenges.

Kedarnath, one of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas, sits at an altitude of 3,583 meters in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district. The temple remains open for only six to seven months each year, attracting around 20 lakh pilgrims during the season. The ropeway will make it easier for devotees to visit this holy site without the physical strain of trekking through steep and rugged terrain.

Hemkund Sahib, a revered Sikh pilgrimage site, is located at an altitude of over 4,600 meters, making it one of the highest Gurudwaras in the world. The current journey, often undertaken on foot, ponies, or palanquins, can be physically exhausting, especially in unpredictable weather conditions. The ropeway will provide much-needed last-mile connectivity, ensuring a smooth and efficient pilgrimage experience.

Beyond religious significance, these projects will also have a positive economic impact on the region, boosting tourism and creating employment opportunities. With the use of cutting-edge technology and a focus on environmental sustainability, the ropeways are expected to become a model for future infrastructure development in ecologically sensitive areas.

For millions of devotees who have long struggled with the arduous treks, these ropeways symbolize a new era of accessibility and convenience. As Uttarakhand moves forward with this ambitious plan, the hope is that spiritual journeys will become not just easier, but also more inclusive, allowing people from all walks of life to experience the divine beauty of the Himalayas without physical barriers.
