Vande Bharat Express Carries 7.5 Crore Passengers Since 2019

New Delhi: The Vande Bharat Express has emerged as a symbol of India’s modern railway transformation, carrying more than 7.5 crore passengers since its launch in February 2019. With 164 services now operational across the country, the semi-high-speed train has redefined long-distance and intercity travel by offering faster, safer, and more comfortable journeys.
Introduced as part of Indian Railways’ modernization drive, the Vande Bharat Express represents a significant shift towards world-class rail infrastructure. Its rapid expansion reflects strong passenger demand and growing preference for premium, technology-driven rail services.

From a single train service in 2019, the network has expanded to cover 274 districts, connecting major cities, pilgrimage centres, business hubs, and tourist destinations across India.

Built in India, Powered by Technology

Manufactured under the Make in India initiative, Vande Bharat trainsets are equipped with advanced features designed to enhance passenger safety and comfort. These include automatic plug doors, rotating seats, bio-vacuum toilets, and GPS-based passenger information systems.

Each train also has comprehensive CCTV coverage, improving onboard security and passenger confidence. The use of modern engineering and indigenous manufacturing has positioned Vande Bharat as a flagship of India’s railway innovation.

Boost to Tourism and Regional Connectivity

The widespread deployment of Vande Bharat services has significantly improved regional connectivity and tourism. The trains link cultural, spiritual, and economic centres, making travel quicker and more convenient for millions of passengers.

The Delhi–Varanasi route, for instance, connects the national capital with one of India’s most important spiritual destinations, benefiting pilgrims and tourists alike. Similarly, the Srinagar–Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra route has improved access to a major pilgrimage centre in Jammu and Kashmir.

This route was inaugurated on June 6, 2025, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, strengthening religious tourism and enhancing all-weather connectivity in the region.

Preferred Choice for Professionals and Families

Beyond tourism, Vande Bharat trains have become a preferred option for business and professional travel. The Bengaluru–Hyderabad service, connecting two major IT hubs, is widely used by technology professionals and corporate travellers due to its speed and comfort.

Families and senior citizens have also benefited from the smooth ride, reduced travel time, and modern onboard facilities, making long journeys less tiring and more dignified.

Environmental and Economic Benefits

Vande Bharat Express contributes to sustainable mobility by offering a cleaner alternative to road and air travel. The trains help reduce carbon emissions while transporting large numbers of passengers efficiently.

By cutting travel time and improving punctuality, these services also enhance productivity for business travellers and support regional economic growth.

Future of High-Tech Rail Travel

The success of Vande Bharat has paved the way for other modern rail initiatives such as the Amrit Bharat Express and Namo Bharat Rapid Rail. Together, these projects reflect Indian Railways’ commitment to delivering world-class services.

Looking ahead, the upcoming Vande Bharat Sleeper trains are expected to revolutionize overnight travel by combining speed, comfort, and modern amenities for long-distance passengers.
