Vice-President Attends Parakram Diwas at Victoria Memorial

Vice-President of India Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan on Thursday attended the Parakram Diwas celebrations at Victoria Memorial Hall in Kolkata, commemorating the 129th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. The event paid homage to one of India’s most resolute freedom fighters whose life embodied courage, sacrifice and unwavering commitment to national liberation.
Parakram Diwas, observed annually on January 23, serves as a reminder of Netaji’s indomitable spirit and his decisive role in shaping India’s freedom struggle.

Honour Over Comfort, Freedom Over Fear

Addressing the gathering, the Vice-President said that Parakram Diwas is not merely a ceremonial tribute but a transmission of courage across generations. He recalled how Netaji consciously chose sacrifice over comfort, refusing a prestigious position in the Indian Civil Services and later relinquishing high political office in pursuit of complete freedom for the nation.

He noted that Netaji charted an alternative path in the freedom movement by organising the Azad Hind Fauj and inspiring Indians to place honour above safety and freedom above fear.

Netaji’s Pan-Indian Influence

The Vice-President highlighted Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s deep connection with various regions of the country, including southern India. He recalled the significant contribution of Indian National Army soldiers from several districts of Tamil Nadu, underscoring Netaji’s ability to unite Indians across geography, language and culture.

He said Netaji’s ideals continue to motivate the youth to rise above fear, shoulder responsibility for the nation’s future and work towards the goal of a Viksit Bharat, in line with the Prime Minister’s vision.

Book Launch on Netaji’s Legacy

During the programme, the Vice-President released the book “Dad Remembers Netaji”, authored by Shri C. V. Ananda Bose. He observed that personal narratives and recollections add a valuable human dimension to the understanding of Netaji’s life and legacy.

Such works, he said, help younger generations connect with history not merely as a sequence of events but as lived experiences shaped by courage, conviction and sacrifice.

Cultural Performances and National Spirit

The Parakram Diwas celebrations featured cultural performances organised by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The performances reflected Netaji’s iconic call of “Jai Hind” and showcased his enduring influence on India’s national consciousness.

Through music, dance and visual narratives, the programme captured the spirit of patriotism and collective resolve that defined Netaji’s movement.

Exhibition of Rare Memorabilia

On the occasion, the Vice-President inaugurated a special exhibition displaying rare and significant memorabilia associated with Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. The exhibits included Netaji’s fountain pen, educational certificates and medals of the Indian National Army.

Describing the artefacts as silent witnesses to India’s freedom struggle, the Vice-President said they reflect the courage, discipline and indomitable spirit that shaped an aspiring nation.

Dignitaries in Attendance

The event was attended by the Governor of West Bengal Dr. C. V. Ananda Bose, Director General of the National Council of Science Museums Shri Arijit Dutta Choudhury, Secretary of Victoria Memorial Hall Shri Anurag Kumar, Director of the Indian Museum Kolkata Shri Sayan Bhattacharya, and several other dignitaries.
