Vice-President Highlights North-East’s Role in National Development

RR Team, October 16, 2024October 16, 2024

The Vice-President of India, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar, today emphasized that the North-East is a key focus in the country’s developmental agenda, asserting that the region plays a crucial role in promoting unity, economic growth, and the cultural fabric of the nation. Acknowledging the importance of the North-East, he praised the Look East and Act East Policy, which has led to significant progress in infrastructure, communication, and connectivity, particularly in the development of airports.

Shri Dhankhar expressed concern over the spread of misinformation and questioned whether unverified and baseless information should be allowed to circulate on public platforms. He stressed the importance of responsible communication, reminding everyone of their commitment to the nation. “India is on the rise, and we must remain united,” he said, urging the youth to stay informed and contribute to the country’s goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047.

Speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Meghalaya Skill and Innovation Hub in Shillong, the Vice-President emphasized the importance of skills, describing them as the optimal use of a person’s inherent talent. He stated that skill development is not just a desirable trait, but a necessity in today’s world. Shri Dhankhar also highlighted the establishment of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, which has allocated ₹60,000 crores for internships benefiting five lakh young people over five years. He emphasized that villages and semi-urban areas should become hubs for skill centers.

Reflecting on his experience in Meghalaya, the Vice-President remarked, “If there is heaven, it is in India; if there is a heavenly spirit, it is in Meghalaya.” He underscored that Meghalaya’s economy has the potential to thrive solely on tourism, given the state’s natural beauty. He encouraged the region to fully utilize its resources by developing skilled human capital to drive the tourism sector.

The event was also attended by Shri C.H. Vijayashankar, Governor of Meghalaya; Shri Conrad K Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya; Dr. Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh, Cabinet Minister; and Shri Donald Phillips Wahlang, Chief Secretary of Meghalaya, among other dignitaries.
