Vice-President Inaugurates 39th Surajkund Crafts Mela

RR Team, January 31, 2026January 31, 2026
Vice-President of India Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan on Friday inaugurated the 39th Surajkund International Atmanirbhar Crafts Mela in Faridabad, Haryana, describing artisans as the custodians of India’s civilisational heritage. The globally recognised fair brings together craftspeople, artists and cultural practitioners from India and abroad, celebrating the nation’s artistic legacy and the spirit of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
Organised annually near the historic Surajkund reservoir, the Mela has evolved into one of the largest platforms for traditional arts, handicrafts and cultural exchange in the country.

A Living Symbol of India’s Cultural Soul

Addressing the gathering, the Vice-President said that over the past four decades, the Surajkund Mela has emerged as a living symbol of India’s cultural soul, artistic excellence and civilisational continuity. He noted that with participation from over 30 countries, the Mela reflects India’s timeless philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam the world is one family.

He observed that the fair not only celebrates creativity but also fosters mutual understanding and respect among cultures, strengthening India’s role as a bridge between civilisations.

Artisans at the Heart of Atmanirbhar Bharat

Highlighting the significance of the Atmanirbhar theme, the Vice-President said artisans carry forward centuries-old knowledge, skills and traditions. Empowering them, he said, is crucial for building an inclusive, sustainable and self-reliant economy.

He referred to initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Kaushal Samman Yojana, noting that focused efforts in skill development, market access and financial support are strengthening India’s handicrafts ecosystem and improving artisans’ livelihoods.

Theme States Showcase Unity in Diversity

Referring to the theme States for this year  Uttar Pradesh and Meghalaya the Vice-President said they beautifully illustrate India’s unity in diversity. He noted that Uttar Pradesh represents a legacy of refined craftsmanship through its textiles, metalwork and embroidery traditions.

Meghalaya’s indigenous crafts, he added, reflect sustainability, harmony with nature and community-based traditions. Together, the two States embody the spirit of Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.

Egypt as Partner Country

Welcoming Egypt as the partner country, the Vice-President said the ancient civilisation’s artistic traditions and cultural depth resonate strongly with India’s own historical journey. He noted that cultural exchanges such as these strengthen people-to-people ties and deepen mutual understanding.

Earlier, he visited the Egypt Pavilion and appreciated the country’s rich heritage and craftsmanship, underlining the importance of cultural diplomacy in today’s interconnected world.

Cultural Performances and Digital Initiatives

The Vice-President appreciated the vibrant cultural performances organised on the theme of Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat, which highlighted India’s pluralistic ethos and cultural harmony.

During the event, he also launched the Mela Saathi Mobile App, designed to enhance visitor experience by providing easy access to information related to stalls, events and facilities at the fair.

Support for Artisans and Organisers

Commending the Surajkund Mela Authority, the Vice-President lauded the coordinated efforts of the Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Textiles, Ministry of External Affairs and the Government of Haryana in organising the event.

He urged visitors to support artisans directly by purchasing authentic handmade products and helping preserve India’s living heritage.

Dignitaries in Attendance

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Haryana Chief Minister Shri Nayab Singh Saini; Union Minister of State for Cooperation Shri Krishan Pal Gurjar; Haryana Ministers Dr. Arvind Kumar Sharma, Shri Vipul Goel, Shri Rajesh Nagar and Shri Gaurav Gautam.

Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt Kamel Zayed Galal, Members of the Haryana Legislative Assembly and several other dignitaries were also present.
