“Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar Stresses Constitutional Duties, Democracy, and Institutional Harmony at Book Launch”

RR Team, May 1, 2025May 12, 2025

Vice President Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar spoke candidly about the challenges of fulfilling constitutional obligations, emphasizing that such duties are not only essential but non-negotiable. During his remarks at the launch of the book I Like Challenges by Governor Smt. Anandiben Patel in Lucknow on May 1, 2025, he shared his belief that facing challenges head-on is part of the essence of public service. “I like challenges, and fulfilling constitutional obligations is our primary responsibility,” he said, stressing that no negligence in this regard can be tolerated. Reflecting on his own experiences, he mentioned that, like others, he too has faced challenges that have tested his resolve, yet he remains committed to his duties, drawing strength from philosophical teachings such as the Gita and Ramayana, which advise focusing on one’s duties without attachment to outcomes.

Shri Dhankhar also addressed the sensitive topic of unresolved crimes and their impact on public conscience. “If a crime shakes the public conscience, it cannot be covered up,” he stated firmly, underscoring the importance of resolving such matters through the law. He emphasized that in a democracy, everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty, but crimes must be addressed in accordance with the law, regardless of their impact.

The Vice President expressed deep concern over recent comments made about high constitutional offices, particularly the President and Governors, which he said deserve serious reflection. “The President of India and the Governor hold positions that are supreme in our Constitution,” he noted, highlighting that the oaths taken by these dignitaries are distinct, as they promise to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution itself. Shri Dhankhar called for greater respect for these positions, stressing that any disparaging comments made about them deserve serious introspection.

Shri Dhankhar also emphasized the importance of harmony and coordination among constitutional institutions, such as the legislature, judiciary, and executive. “Our Constitution does not envision confrontation; it promotes dialogue, deliberation, and healthy debate,” he explained. He further pointed out that institutions must work within their defined roles, respecting the boundaries of each other’s functions to maintain a balanced and participatory democracy. “Just as the legislature cannot make judgments, the judiciary cannot make laws,” he said, advocating for a cooperative approach among all branches of government.

Reflecting on the state of the judiciary, he expressed his deep respect for the Indian judiciary, acknowledging its vital role in upholding democracy. Having spent over four decades as a lawyer, he praised the judiciary for its strength and importance in the democratic framework, urging all institutions to work together in a spirit of cooperation and mutual respect.

Finally, the Vice President underscored the core principles of democracy, emphasizing that its true definition lies in the freedom of expression and the space for healthy debate. He pointed out that while expression is crucial, it loses its meaning if it is not accompanied by dialogue. “Expression and dialogue complement each other; they are the foundations of democracy,” he stated, warning against the dangers of ego and arrogance that arise when dialogue is disregarded. He concluded by emphasizing that a democracy flourishes when diverse voices engage in constructive debate, contributing to a robust and inclusive political environment.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Smt. Sudesh Dhankhar, Governor of Uttar Pradesh Smt. Anandiben Patel, Chief Minister Shri Yogi Adityanath, and Cabinet Minister Shri Suresh Khanna, among others.
